Pasture-raised versus Pasteurized

We get a lot of questions about our whey protein.  Mostly, please ask us why it isn't a 5 gallon jar for $20...  While it would be easier to just say "you get what you pay for", it's probably better to explain why it matters that our non-denatured whey comes from healthy year-round pasture raised cows.

The short version is that the most commercial whey proteins are simply bad for you.  The benefits of their protein quantity are outweighed by the detrimental affects of contaminants (like heavy metals) and the adverse impact of amino acids that are chemically restructured by overexposure to heat (necessary to kill the nasty bacteria that lives in industrially-sourced milk).

If you take whey protein as a supplement, you should read the full article.  It is a little scary.  In this case, quality really does matter.  Read the full article here.

Also, learn a little more about the additional health benefits of non-denatured whey from healthy cows here.

Strong OR Skinny

Usually, we post only original content in this newsletter.  But, this is a great article about the value of strength (i.e. athletic ability) versus being "skinny". It is written specifically for women, but many of the same concepts apply to all of us. Thanks to CrossFit SouthBay for this!  http://www.crossfitsouthbay.com/2011/05/skinny-fat/

Legumes re-visited

Most people who haven't been exposed to the paleo diet don't know what legumes are, let alone that they might not be very healthy!

They are a great example of why the current system of nutritional labeling often isn't enough.  Not all fat/protein/carbohydrates are created equal.

Legumes include peanuts, dried beans, clover, alfalfa, lentils, lupins, mesquite, carob, peas, peanuts, cashews, soybeans, and seeds such as navy, broad, butter, northern, pinto, red, and black beans.

Described simply, legumes all share a common characteristic - they can't be eaten (by humans) raw.  Our bodies simply can't process and/or extract nutritive value from them.  While this alone isn't a problem (per se), it is indicative of the nature of the problem with them.
