A Word from our Transitional General Presbyter

The 226th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) opened on Tuesday as the committees of the assembly began their work using Zoom. The General Assembly is awe-inspiring. It challenges us to look beyond our local context to listen, wonder, and discern what God is saying to the church today.


Here is how you can follow General Assembly 226: Find a full schedule of events here. The committees and the plenary sessions of the General Assembly can be livestreamed at https://ga-pcusa.org/. Interested persons can also register free as an online observer, which allows access to MyGA. A MyGA account provides online observers with access to many of the same resources available to commissioners and other official participants. You can also sign up for a Daily News GA Update. Two early events in the assembly will be the election of Co-Moderators and a Stated Clerk.

Music opportunity for small churches

At the February Presbytery Meeting, the Presbytery approved a recommendation from the Leadership Team to use the balance of the Small Church Grant from the Synod of the Trinity to fund the purchase of hymn accompaniment for 10 hymns for each of up to 75 small churches in the Presbytery of West Virginia through the Presbytery of the Plains and Peaks’ Public Domain Hymn Project. As part of A Season of Discernment, the need for assistance with music was identified by many of our small churches, and this project provides a solution.


The Public Domain Hymn Project is seeking to bring all the Public Domain hymns in our denominational hymnal, Glory to God, to congregations for a small donation. The hymns were recorded in MIDI format and then imported into editing software so that lyrics and backgrounds could be provided. Each hymn is available with white lyrics on a black background or white lyrics on a colored background.


Any small churches in the Presbytery who would like to take advantage of this opportunity may contact the Presbytery. Instruction on how to use the MIDI format is available. Biblical Preaching & Pastoral Leadership for Complicated Times workshop this fall at Union Presbyterian Seminary

Oct. 7-9 at Union Presbyterian Seminary's Early Center, Richmond, VA

This workshop equips pastors and church leaders to navigate difficult times with the enduring strength of biblical preaching and compassionate leadership. Led by Brian Blount and Alex Evans, it will focus on Biblical Foundations; Complicated Issues, Clear Messages; Leading with Empathy; and Building a Thriving Church Community. Early registration, which is $600, ends June 30. Standard registration, beginning July 1, is $750.

Church Financial Leadership Grants available from the Presbyterian Foundation

If you are a pastor, commissioned ruling elder, leader of a 1001 New Worshiping Community or member of a stewardship team, the Presbyterian Foundation has Church Financial Leadership Grants available for you. The grants will enable you to institute best practices for church financial leadership, introduce you to new models of giving and stewardship, and offer you new ways to talk about money and form generous disciples within your church. Each grant helps cover half the cost of registration, transportation, lodging, meals or other expenses to church financial leadership events, particularly Stewardship Kaleidoscope or the Lake Institute's Executive Certificate in Religious Fundraising. (Your church or another source will need to provide the other half.)

PDA National Response Team Annual Meeting held in April in Texas

Each April, the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance National Response Team (PDA NRT) gathers for continuing education, worship, and fellowship for the NRT Annual Meeting. Gathered at Mo Ranch Camp and Conference Center in Hunt, TX, the team spent three days soaking in the wisdom of plenary speakers, connecting with one another, preparing for compassionate service, and worshipping the One who has called us all into this shared work of ministry. Throughout our time together, PDA Staff, NRT, and guests contemplated the different facets of compassion and how they guide everything we do in the ministry of disaster recovery. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance 2023 Mosaic published

Thank you to the churches and individuals who have given to the One Great Hour of Sharing special offering and have responded to specific disaster appeals. The following "Mosaic" is a report on how PDA funds were used in 2023 to help people dealing with disasters, both domestically and internationally. You might note how PDA has been active in West Virginia, including the long-term recovery efforts through WVMAW! Your concern and support for those dealing with disaster is Matthew 25 in action. May God bless us all in our efforts to be faithful. - Forrest Palmer, PDA National Response Team

Online event for worship leaders on Aug. 17

Hearts and Minds Prepared for Worship is a day-long experience for all worship leaders, be they clergy, worship committee members, or educators. It starts with the keynote, Future(s) of Worship, by Rev. Dr. Rich Voelz, Professor of Preaching and Worship at Union Presbyterian Seminary. That is followed by Workshop A, which has four options to choose from, then a break for lunch, then Workshop B, which has four different options to choose from, then a panel discussion. Cost is $30 for the first attendee from a church, $25 for the second attendee, and $15 for the third or more attendee. Register here.

Restorative Wilderness Experience for Pastors survey

Emily Cowser, a Master of Divinity student at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, is in the beginning stages of designing and facilitating a restorative wilderness experience for pastors as part of her Adaptive and Innovative Ministry Emphasis project. She has asked us to share this survey as she gathers data from pastors to gauge the viability of this experience and learn about pastors’ needs for restoration. Click here to take.
