The Annual Meeting & Incoming Presidency
As I write this for the May PSA Postings, I am reminded over and over how time is flying by this spring. The semester is ending here at UGA, abstracts for our annual meeting have already been submitted and received, and my calendar alarms are sending important PSA deadlines my way. If you have not registered for the Annual Meeting already, the standard registration rate ($550) will end on Friday, June 30th, after which the registration fee will increase to the onsite registration rate ($700). While registering for the meeting, there are a number of luncheons, evening meetings and events that you can register for and participate in. I encourage you to visit the website for the Annual Meeting where you can review the schedule of events. The traditional events include the PSA BBQ, which will be held on Wednesday, July 12th at the National Constitution Center, and the PSA Awards Celebration on Thursday, July 13th. The business meeting will be held Wednesday, July 12th and I encourage you to attend to find out about the status of PSA and hear the updates and accomplishments achieved by our organization in the past year. For those of you wanting to get involved in PSA this is a good way to get started by getting familiar with PSA’s mission, activities and networking with other members in attendance. The 2023 Annual Meeting will host 14 symposia/workshops on a variety of topics. For the complete list visit the PSA annual meeting website at the link above.
As my time to serve as PSA President approaches I have been giving thought to what I would like to accomplish in that year. One of those is to continue to identify ways of providing benefits to members of PSA. In this newsletter, you will read about the improvement in the time to first decision for both of the PSA journals. I would like to see that time continue to improve, as well as encourage more papers to be submitted to the journals. There are other ideas being discussed by the PSA board, which are still in the early stages of development, and some will be discussed at the business meeting in July. I look forward to seeing everyone in Philadelphia July 10th - 13th!
Brian Fairchild
First Vice President, PSA

2023 Undergraduate Student Competition
The family of Dr. Bernard “Bernie” Wentworth has initiated a fund to reward undergraduate students for their abstract presentation at the PSA Annual Meeting.
During his career, Wentworth was very interested in developing undergraduate students and encouraging them to pursue their education and interest in poultry science. As a result, the family donated funds to award $100 to each undergraduate student receiving a Certificate of Excellence at the PSA Annual Meeting. Additional donations are being accepted from the PSA membership. The monetary awards will be given until the funds are depleted.
Dr. Wentworth served as President of the Poultry Science Association in 1992-1993. He was also an Associate Editor for Poultry Science® and was inducted as a PSA Fellow in 1996 for his contributions to the Association. Dr. Wentworth was the Chair of the Poultry Science Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison starting in 1985 until it merged to the Department of Meat and Animal Sciences in 1996. Even after the merge, he served as the Associate Chair of the new department until 2004.
Donations may be made online at the link below or by mailing a check to the Poultry Science Association, 4114C Fieldstone Road, Champaign, IL 61822.

HPAI and Migratory Birds
As summer approaches in the Northern Hemisphere, the poultry industry and owners of backyard flocks are preparing for another season of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). Approximately a year later, PSA reconnects with Veterinarian Chanelle Taylor (Cargill Canada) to discuss migratory birds, biosecurity measures to take, and what we have learned in the past year from HPAI.

Comparing Salmonella infection: Caged versus cage-free housing
This study looked into the issue surrounding Salmonella Enteritidis infection in laying hens resulting in contaminated eggs. With the egg industry shifting to cage-free setups, there remains uncertainty about food safety ramifications associated with this transition. The study examines the infection rate of pullets in both a conventional cage setting as well as a cage-free setup. The study found that birds reared in caged housing were more susceptible to S. Entertidis colonization than birds raised in cage-free housing. It is also mentioned that the stocking density of birds in caged housing was higher than the stocking density of birds reared in a cage-free setting.
