From the Desk of the Editor-in-Chief of Poultry Science®
First, I want to personally thank the Section Editors and reviewers for the amazing work that they have done over the last year. The turn-around time from submission to first Editorial outcome (online publishing) is now 68 days. This is a decrease in about 3 weeks over the last two years.
Second, submissions to PSJ have increased by over 30% over the last two years. In 2023, PSJ had over 1800 submissions! Lastly, PSJ is now ranked 4th out of 62 in Impact Factor (4.4) in the Agriculture, Dairy, and Animal Science category.
I would like to share some important housekeeping notes for Authors and Reviewers. Read my full PSA Insights report here, including our interest in developing some Special Issues of Poultry Science®.

Latin American Scientific Conference Symposium Proposals

William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professorship
North Carolina State University recently announced the 2024 William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professors. This award is one of the college’s highest honors and was created to recognize outstanding scholars, leaders, teachers, and mentors. The Association is pleased to share that active PSA Member and Fellow (elected in 2020), Kenneth Anderson was one of twelve individuals recognized at NC State with this honor. Congratulations, Ken!

Guinea Fowl Meat Quality
With little investigations into the quality of guinea fowl meat, researchers in Poland conducted a study to evaluate the fatty acid profile and quality parameters of meat from these birds. The study yields details into the nutrition of guinea fowl meat as well as opportunities for further research.

Layer Chicks: Best Transport Stocking Density
Stocking density of layer chicks in transportation from the hatchery to rearing operations has raised concerns by animal welfare organizations. This study from The Journal of Applied Poultry Research analyzed the stressor effects of stocking density in transporting layer chicks. In the past, these kinds of studies have focused on broiler chicks, so this is a unique opportunity to determine the impact on layer chicks.

Broiler Flaxseed Diet Did Not Influence the Impact of Disease on Growth Performance
This short communication from The Journal of Applied Poultry Research analyzed the effects of a maternal flaxseed diet on broilers diagnosed with novel avian reovirus and infectious. The results of this study showed that maternal-fed flaxseed diets did not influence the impact of disease on growth performance.

The PSA Hatchery is seeking nominations for Jr. Student Director. The Jr. Student Director serves on the PSA Board of Directors along with the Sr. Student Director. Graduate students interested in this role are to complete the nomination form linked below (nominees may be self-nominated or you may nominate one of your peers).
The Jr. Student Director will serve in this role on the Board of Directors from 2024-2025 and then assume the Sr. Student Director role from 2025-2026. The Student Directors serve to represent the student interests of the Association.

Area of Expertise:
Dr. Anderson’s responsibilities include Extension, Research and Teaching responsibilities in laying hen husbandry, management, nutrition, and food safety. His research programs have been diverse starting with research into egg cooling and safety associated with the FDA Egg Safety Plan. Then working with researchers from Duke University to refine the animal model with chickens for biomedical research into Ovarian Cancer Prevention while continuing research at the Piedmont Research Station include free range, cage-free, enriched colony cage, enrichable colony cage, conventional cage production, nutrition, and egg quality and safety. Currently he is working on methods related to Ventilation Shutdown Plus and its derivatives of Heat, Humidity, CO2 and Nitrogen as processes for the depopulation of poultry in related to disease outbreaks and pandemics in society.
Where did you grow up and did you have poultry in your youth?
Ken Anderson was raised on a Laying hen farm that produces eggs as a contract producer for Corn Belt Hatchery of Gibson City, Illinois. Then during his BS at SIU-C he worked at the Poultry Research Farm for his entire BS degree.
What was your first job out of school and what were your responsibilities?
Upon graduation he served as the General Manager of State Line Egg Producers Cooperative, Inc., Beatrice, NE a Poultry Cooperative headquartered in Kansas. In 1983 he accepted a Teaching/Research position in the Dept. of Animal Science at Kansas State University. In this capacity he taught and served as the Superintendent of the “T.B. Avery Poultry Research Unit”. Simultaneously, he completed his MS in 1987 and PhD. in 1990 in Poultry Management.
If you had a motto that applied to your daily professional career, what would it be?
"I have always wanted to give back to an industry that has provided me with a career that I never dreamt of."
What value does your PSA membership offer you?
PSA Membership has provided me the opportunity to interact with other experts from all over the world. In addition, it has allowed me to work closely with others to address issues facing the research world, with service on the AAALAC and BAACO Boards of Directors representing the PSA.
What is your favorite poultry breed?
White Crested Black Polish
