The deadline to submit abstracts for the 2023 PSA Annual Meeting in Philadelphia is a little over a month away. Abstracts are due by Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at 11:59 PM EDT.


All accepted abstracts are to be presented in person.

Campylobacter Control


CDC has reported the major cause of bacterial foodborne illness in the U.S. is Campylobacter jejuni. We are only beginning to understand the epidemiology of Campylobacter. Understanding this and the unique characteristics of Campylobacter will help us develop on farm Campylobacter reduction programs for broiler chickens. Join PSA and presenter Charles Hofacre of Southern Poultry Research Group on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at 12:00 PM CDT. This event is free for PSA Members.

The effects of moldy corn on bird health


In an effort to better protect animal and human health, poultry scientists are taking a close look at moldy corn. In a recent study, published in Poultry Science®, researchers measured bird performance and examined mycotoxin levels when laying hens were fed different amounts of moldy corn.

Where did you grow up and did you have poultry in your youth?

I grew up in a small town called Dangjin in Chungnam province, South Korea. I did not have poultry, but I visited my neighbor who had about 10 free-ranging hens in their backyard.


What was your first job out of school and what were your responsibilities?

My first job after receiving my Ph.D. was as a research scientist at National Veterinary Research Institute, South Korea. I was involved in nationwide serological surveillance of animal diseases in South Korea.


If you had a motto that applied to your daily professional career, what would it be?

My Ph.D. supervisor once quoted Albert Einstein's saying that "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler." Since then, this has been my motto to find a balance between simple and simpler in my professional career.


What value does your PSA membership offer you?

Being one of the community members and sharing our knowledge of chickens to support global poultry industry.


What is your favorite poultry breed?

The deadline to nominate colleagues for the FASS-American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) New Frontiers in Animal Nutrition Award is approaching. The award is designed to stimulate, acknowledge, and reward pioneering and innovative research that benefits humankind or is relevant to the nutrition of animals and the nutritional value of foods from animals. The award will be presented at the meeting of choice of the award winner [during the annual meeting of the American Dairy Science Association (ADSA), American Society of Animal Science (ASAS), or Poultry Science Association (PSA)] in the summer of 2023.

Effects of Supplemental Biochar on Broilers


This research note examines the effects of supplementing broiler diets with biochar. Biochar has been shown to have a positive effect on body weight gain in both pigs and turkeys. The study did not find similar changes in body weight gain in broilers as had been reported in pigs and turkeys. However, apparent ileal digestible energy was reduced with a greater amount of biochar supplementation.
