Looking Back
We had quite a PSA week last month! I really enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with so many people, listen to new and innovative science, and just have fun at the 2022 PSA Annual Conference in San Antonio! Thank you to all those who attended! We had a much larger than anticipated turnout – well over 900 people attended the meeting (see Rebecca's breakdown below).
I also wrapped up my time serving as PSA President in San Antonio. Thank you to all of the members for allowing me the opportunity to serve! This Association has great meaning for me, and it was an honor to serve in this capacity. I enjoyed my time, and have met so many amazing people! This is also a great opportunity to extend my appreciation and thank you’s to those who have recently rolled off the Board of Directors as well, including Christine Alvarado (Past-President), Sergio Vieira and Nickki Tillman (Directors) and Gabriela Cardoso Dal Pont (Senior Student Director).
At the Business Meeting, I handed the gavel to our incoming president, Tom Porter. I would like to congratulate him, and wish him great success in this upcoming year. I would also like to welcome and congratulate the new individuals onto the board, including Martin Zuidhof (2nd Vice President), Chasity Pender and Sandra Rodrigues (Directors), and Jo Ann Chew (Junior Student Director). I am excited about this year under the leadership of Dr. Porter, and know that great things will happen for the Poultry Science Association!
PSA has such a great membership base! Thank you all again, and I am already looking forward to seeing you next summer, July 10-13, 2023 in Philadelphia!
Sincerely,
Karen Schwean-Lardner
Past President, PSA

Breeding Water Efficient Chickens
Join PSA as we sit down with Sara Orlowski (University of Arkansas; Fayetteville, AR) to discuss research she is conducting on water efficient chickens. Studying several generations of broilers, Sara has been working to select the desirable traits that contribute to a low water conversion ratio (LWCR), making the bird more water efficient. We discuss the research, what can be deduced so far, and how this can benefit the global population that depends on chicken as a source of protein.

Avoiding Egg Allergies Through Consistent Labeling
Avoiding egg proteins may be tough for many egg-allergic consumers. New research suggests that products from older laying hens, called spent fowl, are at a high risk for egg protein contamination. Researchers think one solution may lie in more consistent allergen labeling.
