REST for Jasper evacuees to close August 30

August 29, 2024

With many Jasperites returning home, the Municipality of Jasper has requested that the City of Edmonton’s Rapid Emergency Support Terminal (REST) close Friday, August 30 at 4 p.m.

Since July 23, 2,826 Jasper wildfire evacuees registered at the REST, which co-ordinated accommodations and funding for food, water and other essential items. The REST also connected evacuees with other agencies such as the Canadian Red Cross, Service Canada, insurance companies, Hope Mission, Alberta Health Services and Alberta Supports.

“We’re proud to support our neighbours in their time of need,” said Interim City Manager Eddie Robar. “We’re relieved that Jasperites can return to their community and we’ll keep them in our thoughts as they begin the recovery and rebuilding process.”

Jasper residents and hotel staff coordinated by the Canadian Red Cross must check-out by 11 a.m. on September 3, unless prior arrangements have been made with the hotel. The Municipality of Jasper and Parks Canada are working to support evacuees who require longer-term accommodation; those in need of housing should visit jasper-alberta.ca/p/jasperwildfire

Registered evacuees’ access to transit and other City amenities will end on Sept. 3.

About the REST

The REST is staffed largely by the City of Edmonton’s Emergency Support Response Team (ESRT), which provides support to people displaced from their homes during emergencies. More than 300 City employees worked at least one shift at the REST.

The City of Edmonton’s costs to operate the REST and support Jasper evacuees will be recovered, as per agreements with the Government of Alberta and the Municipality of Jasper.
