Free Big Bin & Eco Station Events are back
April 30, 2024

The City of Edmonton is once again hosting a series of free Big Bin and Eco Station events, providing residents with the opportunity to drop off furniture, appliances and other items that cannot be picked up through regular residential waste collection. These events encourage Edmontonians to properly sort and dispose of their waste, helping keep waste from entering the landfill and keeping our city clean.

Eight Big Bin Events will run on select weekends from May to September at various locations across the city:
  • May 4 and 5 - Ellerslie Fleet Facility (2415 - 101 St SW)
  • May 25 and 26 - Castle Downs (11520 - 153 Ave)
  • June 1 and 2 - Commonwealth Stadium (11100 Stadium Rd)
  • June 8 and 9 - Northlands (Wayne Gretzky Dr & 119 Ave)
  • June 22 and 23 - Terwillegar Recreation Centre (2051 Leger Rd)
  • September 7 and 8 - Callingwood Rec Centre (17740 - 69 Ave)
  • September 14 and 15 - Commonwealth Stadium (11100 Stadium Rd)
  • September 21 and 22 - Mill Woods Town Centre (2331 - 66 St)

Before attending a Big Bin event, the City encourages Edmontonians to consider donating items in good condition to a local donation centre or charity.

The City also recommends reviewing the list of accepted materials before attending these events. Items allowed include:
  • couches, chairs, mattresses and other household furniture items too large for curbside pickup
  • fridges, freezers, washers, dryers and other large household appliances
  • computers, televisions and other household electronics
  • Unbagged grass clippings and yard waste, including branches no longer than 1.2 m (4 ft) and 0.75 m (2.5 ft) in diameter (accepted for free anytime during the year)
  • tires and scrap metal
  • excess household garbage (should not include food scraps or recycling)

All materials will be accepted at no charge, including bulky items, appliances and electronics. Residents attending Big Bin Events are required to unload their own vehicles. The City thanks all attendees for their patience as significant interest is anticipated at these events and line-ups are expected.

Household hazardous waste, including batteries, paint, varnish or household cleaners, will not be accepted at Big Bin Events. These items should be taken to an Eco Station for proper disposal, at no charge, anytime during regular hours of operation.

In addition to the Big Bin Events, the City of Edmonton will also hold four free Eco Station weekend events on the following dates:
  • May 11 and 12
  • June 15 and 16
  • August 24 and 25
  • September 28 and 29

These events will occur at all Eco Stations between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Free weekends do not apply to the Edmonton Waste Management Centre for residential drop-offs.

Edmontonians who are unsure how to dispose of particular items are encouraged to use the WasteWise app. The app makes sorting simple, allowing users to search items and find out how and where they should be disposed. WasteWise can also provide weekly collection day reminders, so residents never miss a collection day. Download the WasteWise app for free today from the App Store or Google Play.
