The City of Edmonton will unveil a new look for Compost School this fall following some substantial upgrades happening over the coming months.
Located beside the John Janzen Nature Centre, this year-round facility will temporarily close for upgrades this summer to make Compost School more accessible, more inviting, and ultimately, more engaging for visitors and events.
Construction is anticipated to last from June to September. The work involves re-landscaping the site, a new deck and shed, additional water fill stations and interpretive signage for visitors. These updates will ensure the longevity of the site so residents can continue to enjoy Compost School for years to come.
Compost School provides free composting workshops to help Edmontonians gain hands-on experience with a variety of composting methods. The existing facility was designed and constructed in the 1990s and is in need of updating.
Itβs clear Edmontonians have an appetite for compost education, as Compost School reached a record number of visitors in 2023. With the site closed over the summer, there are still a number of ways to access composting information. The City of Edmonton and Edmonton Public Library have a number of resources available about composting.
Throughout the month of June, composting experts from the City of Edmonton will be hosting Life Skills: Composting & Soil Building courses at EPL branches throughout the city.
