The City of Edmonton is implementing immediate changes to the Mobile Food Vending program to streamline the application process for mobile vendors and support the activation of communities and parks. The changes support Edmonton businesses through a reduction in wait times while making it easier for local vendor startups.
The following changes are now in effect:
- Mobile food vendors no longer require an additional permit to vend on public land once they are on the Approved Vendor List. This eliminates approval of locations, dates and times, and allows vendors to move locations.
- First Come First Serve Parks Roaming Permits and Individual Road Roaming Permits are no longer required.
- For 23 City parks with high vending demand, 34 marked parking spaces are available during regular park hours on a first come, first serve basis. Vendors are not permitted to park in other locations throughout these parks unless otherwise authorized.
- Vendors may use any legal parking space in all other City parks, parking lots and roadways. If in a paid parking area, vendors must pay to park and need to abide by any parking restrictions, including time limits. EPark fees are a requirement of the traffic regulations, regardless of the vehicle that is parked.
- For sidewalk food vending, vendors are required to submit a declaration form acknowledging that they are following vending terms and conditions and identify the specific location where they will be vending. Sidewalk vending declarations enable the City to monitor safety and accessibility requirements.
- Exclusion zones for specific areas apply and include a two-block radius around special events (e.g. festivals, farmer’s markets, etc.).
- Collection of the current fees associated with vending permits is paused starting today, July 2, 2024.
- Changes implemented to the vending process this season will be evaluated by the end of this year, and any adjustments will be shared in early 2025.
All mobile food vendors continue to be responsible for ensuring compliance with municipal and provincial rules and regulations. Mobile food vending operators are encouraged to visit edmonton.ca/Vending for details.
