Canada Day fireworks set to soar over Edmonton

Canada Day fireworks will light up the sky over Edmonton's central River Valley parks and the North Saskatchewan River on July 1.


Fireworks Show

Time: 11 p.m.

Watch the fireworks show over the central River Valley on Monday, July 1. The fireworks will be livestreamed by CBC Edmonton for anyone who would like to watch from home. 


Excellent viewing locations (direct sightline):

  • Queen Elizabeth Park and Hill
  • River Valley Road Trail
  • Victoria Park
  • Ezio Faraone Park (west entrance to High Level Bridge on 109 Street north)


Good viewing locations (indirect sightline):

  • Alberta Legislature Grounds
  • Walterdale Hill Road sidewalks and east Promenade 
  • Government House Park
  • 109 Street (between Saskatchewan Drive and the High Level Bridge)


Note: No viewing is available from Kinsmen Park. 

Pedestrian access will be unavailable in Kinsmen Park, including trail access, after road closures are in effect. Kinsmen playground, tennis courts and picnic areas are closed starting at 6 a.m. on Canada Day, July 1.


North-South Pedestrian Bridge Access:

The following pedestrian access across the North Saskatchewan River will be unavailable from 9:45 p.m. until 90 minutes after the fireworks:

  • High Level Bridge
  • 109 Street southbound, from 97 Avenue/ High Level Bridge to 87 Avenue
  • Menzies Bridge

Pedestrian access across the river will be available via the Groat Road Bridge, James Macdonald Bridge, Walterdale Bridge and the Low Level Bridge.


Watercraft

Watercraft may be taken out on the river to view the fireworks, however for safety reasons, a portion of the river to the north of the launch zone at Kinsmen Park (from approximately the Menzies Bridge to the Walterdale Bridge) will be blocked off to all watercraft during the fireworks. Before taking watercraft out on the North Saskatchewan River, check boat launch notifications as closures may occur. 


Canada Day Road Closures

Expect traffic delays two hours before the fireworks and two hours after the show. Be patient and courteous to help make travel safe for everyone.

  • High Level Bridge sidewalks closed (both sides)

  • Walterdale Bridge – closed to vehicles; pedestrian access open (both sides)
  • Queen Elizabeth Park Road
  • 107 Street, from 98 Avenue to Jasper Avenue

  • 96 Avenue, from 106 Street to Fortway Drive
  • 107 Street, from 98 Avenue to Fortway Drive


Mill Woods Fireworks – Road Closures

7:30 p.m.

  • 66 Street, from 28 Avenue to 23 Avenue

10:45 p.m.

  • 23 Avenue, from 66 Street to Mill Woods Road
  • 28 Avenue, from 66 Street to Mill Woods Road
  • Mill Woods Road, from 23 Avenue to 28 Avenue
  • 23 Avenue at 50 Street, closed to westbound traffic
  • 28 Avenue at 50 Street, closed to westbound traffic
  • 66 Street at 34 Avenue, closed to southbound traffic


Parking Restrictions

Increased parking restrictions will be in effect on Canada Day. The installation of no parking signs and no stopping signs will begin early on July 1 to ensure that these lanes are clear of vehicles during peak traffic times.

There will be no stopping or parking from 7 p.m. until midnight at these locations:

  • 109 Street, between 99 Avenue and 104 Avenue
  • 109 Street, between 82 Avenue and Saskatchewan Drive
  • 107 Street, between 99 Avenue and 102 Avenue
  • 105 Street, between 102 Avenue and 104 Avenue
  • River Valley Road, from 105 Street to Groat Road


After 8 p.m., parking will not be available at the Kinsmen Sports Centre, Queen Elizabeth Pool or Victoria Park Site #6 Picnic Shelter. 


Please obey all signage and the direction of security personnel. Vehicles illegally parked will be tagged and towed. For more information about parking visit edmonton.ca/parking.


ETS Canada Day Service

On July 1, all ETS bus routes will operate on their regular Sunday schedules, with additional service for the fireworks display. Capital/Metro Line trains will run on Saturday schedules. Capital Line trains will run every 15 minutes until approximately 1 a.m. on July 2. Regular transit fares apply.


Please allow plenty of time to get where you're going on Canada Day. Plan ahead and expect travel delays both before and after the fireworks display. Visit edmonton.ca/transit to plan your trip. 


Fireworks Safety

Fireworks can be extremely dangerous and disruptive to individuals, property and the environment, particularly in dry conditions, if not used or handled correctly.


Be safe and remember, you must have a permit issued by the City of Edmonton to use fireworks within city limits. Always check to see if there is a fire ban in effect before use and make sure wind conditions are safe, as per permit conditions. 


Under the City of Edmonton’s Public Places Bylaw 14614 and Community Standards Bylaw 14600, any use of fireworks without proper permits is illegal and subject to enforcement, which can include fines of up to $10,000. Celebrate Canada Day at the Muttart Conservatory. Experience our summer feature pyramid, Where Pyramids Collide, where you will see how botanicals were utilized in Ancient Egyptian society and their connections to past and present. We will have different activities and artifacts sprinkled throughout the Muttart for the duration of this show. We will also have other activities to celebrate the multiculturalism of our country: henna, airbrush tattoos, crafts, a scavenger hunt and more!


John Janzen Nature Centre

Go bonkers for bugs at the Nature Centre on Canada Day! It's the start of Super Fly July and we'll be discovering what kind of insects live around us by going on a bug hunt and pond dipping for aquatic creatures. Come see what all the buzz is about!


Canada Day at the Alberta Legislature

Time: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Location: Alberta Legislature Building, Violet King Henry Plaza

Cost: Free admission

Celebrate Canada Day at one of the most picturesque places in our province, the Alberta Legislature Grounds! Canada Day at the Alberta Legislature will feature free family-friendly entertainment and activities, including food trucks, ceremonial events, live performances and more. 


Mill Woods Canada Day Celebration

Time: 2 to 11 p.m.

Location: Mill Woods Park (66 Street and 23 Avenue)

Cost: Free admission

In its 32nd year, the Mill Woods Canada Day Celebration will celebrate our nation’s rich history and the diversity of the community with a free and inclusive event featuring multicultural performances, dance, music, fun and fireworks. Fireworks display starts at 11p.m. 


ICE District Canada Day Celebration

Time: 2 to 10 p.m.

Location: ICE District Plaza

Cost: Free admission

Check the ICE District website for information about the Canada Day bash in ICE District. The Canada Day festivities will conclude at 10 p.m. to allow enough time for attendees to take in the firework display over the central River Valley at 11 p.m.


RE/MAX Field

Watch the fireworks and a baseball game at one location! Come to RE/MAX Field for a night of baseball (Edmonton Riverhawks vs. the Port Angeles) and family-friendly entertainment, and stay in the ballpark for a front row seat to view the Canada Day fireworks. Game starts at 7:05 p.m. The post-game party will include performances by Brasstactics and the Canadian classic rock band Giv’r. Tickets on sale at GoHawks.ca.


Spend the day downtown on Canada Day

Pack your sunscreen, your beach towel and some snacks, and splash away your Canada Day in the fountain on the City Hall Plaza


The Works Art and Design Festival will fill Sir Winston Churchill Square with art and music on July 1. Visual art installations, food trucks and tours open at 11 a.m. Art-making workshops for all ages run from noon until 8 p.m. Enjoy music and comedy on The Works Street Stage featuring great Alberta acts, hosted by Peter Paul van Camp and Girl Brain from noon until 9:30 p.m.


While you’re downtown, be sure to add the Art Gallery of Alberta, and the Royal Alberta Museum to your itinerary. Complete your Canada Day by visiting one of downtown Edmonton’s many fine bars and restaurants.


Spray Parks

Splash away on Canada Day at one of the City's spray parks. Please note that the Kinsmen Park Spray Park will close at 7 p.m. on July 1.


Please note: The City Hall fountain and spray parks will close in the event of extreme weather/poor air quality. Please check the Facilities Notifications page or the Spray Park map before heading out.


Recreation Centres

City of Edmonton Recreation and Leisure Centres are open this long weekend. With 20 different locations, why not visit a facility you have not visited before or take the plunge at your neighbourhood swimming pool? 


Saturday and Sunday operate on regular hours. Statutory holiday hours are in effect on Monday. For detailed hours and admission information, please visit edmonton.ca/RecCentres.  


Peter Hemingway Fitness and Leisure Centre is closed to the public due to rehabilitation work. St. Francis Xavier Sports Centre and Central Lions Recreation Centre are closed on Canada Day.


Outdoor Pools

City’s outdoor pools, Borden Natural Swimming Pool, Fred Broadstock, Queen Elizabeth and Wîhkwêntôwin (formerly Oliver) outdoor pools are open for the long weekend. Outdoor pools opening is dependent on weather and air quality conditions. Check Facility Notifications for the latest status. The status is updated daily at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Outdoor pool closures are determined by temperature (below 18 °C ).


Golf Courses

Get ready to swing into action. All City golf courses - Riverside, Rundle and Victoria, as well as the Victoria Driving Range are open for the season and open on Canada Day. For more information, visit: edmonton.ca/golf or check out @coe_golf on Instagram for specials, events, contests and more.
