Resolution Sets Aside May 16-22 as National Search and Rescue Week
|
A member of Civil Air Patrol’s Congressional Squadron helped lead the passage of a resolution in the U.S. Senate May 17 honoring the nation’s search and rescue personnel, which includes CAP’s more than 37,000 emergency responders.
Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., inserted text for the bipartisan resolution into the Congressional Record designating May 16-22 as National Search and Rescue Week.
“Every day in Washington state and across our nation, these brave volunteers exemplify courage, commitment, and compassion in performing their duties," she said. "Today, we have passed a small act of recognition for their heroic efforts.”

Siblings Jared and Kelly Calderon pay tribute to their mentor, U.S. Air Force Capt. John Robertson, in this NBC 5 news video. Robertson, an instructor pilot who died May 14 when his ejection seat activated while his plane was on the ground at Sheppard Air Force Base, was also a CAP member who often shared his expertise with CAP cadets like the Calderons while also inspiring them along the way.
Desire to Excel Helps Kentucky Cadet Cope with Life-Threatening Genetic Disease
|
Cadet Col. Meagan Miller — like her fellow recipients of the Gen. Carl A. Spaatz Award, Civil Air Patrol’s top cadet honor — knows about achievement.
A sophomore in the Honors College at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Miller majors in cybersecurity and information technology with minors in computer science and music. She plays bass clarinet in her college band and church choir.
In high school, she competed on the archery team and was an award-winning musician in the band. She's a unified partner for the Special Olympics. And she knits. She’s working on an online shop to sell the warm woolen goods she has made.
A member of the Kentucky Wing’s Boone County Cadet Squadron, she crafts monthly online aerospace education quizzes to keep fellow cadets engaged.
There’s another facet to Miller’s story.
She has accomplished all this and more while dealing with an ultrarare disease, Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome — a chronic, potentially life-threatening, genetic bone marrow failure syndrome with a predisposition to developing acute myeloid leukemia, a type of blood cancer.

Dynamic Duo: Indiana Wing Mother, Daughter Achieve Top CAP Awards
|
One good turn deserves another, the saying goes. An Indiana Wing mother and daughter exemplified that concept May 4 when they were honored for attaining Civil Air Patrol’s top achievements, respectively, for adult members and cadets.
Capt. Carol O’Brien, St. Joe Valley Cadet Squadron commander, received the Gill Robb Wilson Award, presented to adult members who exemplify leadership in CAP’s three core programs — aerospace education, emergency services, and cadet programs.
Not to be outdone, her daughter, Cadet Col. Caitlin O’Brien, received the Gen. Carl A. Spaatz Award.

Cadets 'Pet the Jet' During Reaper Stop
|
Cadets from two South Dakota Wing squadrons and their chaperones were able to see a U.S. Air Force MQ-9 Reaper remote-piloted aircraft during its recent four-day visit to Ellsworth Air Force Base.
Members from the Rushmore and Lookout Mountain composite squadrons received a special invitation from the base for a first-hand look at the MQ-9 Reaper, piloted by the 89th Attack Squadron at Ellsworth.
The MQ-9 visit to Ellsworth marked the first time such a craft has landed at a Global Strike Force base, making it a rare opportunity for the Civil Air Patrol members.

Arizona Wing Cadet Flying High with CAP

Cadet 2nd Lt. Abby Matsuyoshi, a fifth-generation Japanese American, is equally proud of her Asian heritage and her numerous accomplishments in Civil Air Patrol.
A CAP member since April 2021, her most recent achievements include earning a private pilot certificate in December through the Cadet Wings program, a professional drone pilot certificate, and an advanced ground instructor certificate and being awarded a CAP Foundation scholarship for additional flight training.
Matsuyoshi got a warm welcome when she joined CAP three years ago, she recalled. “They’ve always been really supportive of everyone,” she said. “I’ve always felt a part of the group.”

Wyoming Wing Members Garner Multiple Honors
|
The Wyoming Wing Conference on May 4 featured something extra for the 137 Civil Air Patrol members and their families and guests in attendance — presidential and Headquarters U.S. Air Force awards and a gubernatorial proclamation.
Lt. Col. Rod Burnett (pictured, third from left) of the wing's Cheyenne Composite Squadron was among the 10 members receiving the Chief of Staff of the Air Force Volunteer Excellence Award. Additional awards for Burnett and other wing members included the President of the United States Volunteer Lifetime Achievement Award.

Missouri Cadet Qualifies as Drone Instructor Pilot
|
Cadet Chief Master Sgt. Kade Bruce (left) of the Springville Regional Composite Squadron was recognized May 7 as the first Missouri Wing cadet to become an instructor pilot for small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS), commonly known as drones.
Bruce is also one of only two cadets in Civil Air Patrol’s seven-wing North Central Region and only six in the entire organization with that distinction, said Lt. Col. Raun Hamilton, Missouri Wing vice commander.

New Initiative Sends Cadets to Professional Conferences
|
Earlier this year 34 CAP cadets participated in a professional conference through a new initiative called UCAN (Underrepresented Cadet Aero Networking).
UCAN’s primary mission is to help cadets practice networking skills and connect with professionals who share similar interests. Thanks to a generous grant from the U.S. Air Force, nearly every aspect of this activity was fully funded.
