North Carolina Wing's Bagnell Follows Call from Local Classroom to Global Conflict

Some hear it as a calling, the irresistible, undeniable tug toward a higher purpose. Still others sense “a still, small voice” to make a difference in the world, whether in their neighborhood or across the globe.

No matter the term, Civil Air Patrol Maj. Tim Bagnell (standing. left) seems to have always had a finely tuned ear and heart to detect that gentle nudge. It’s taken him from the financial sector as a financial officer to the class- room as teacher in North Carolina, and to war-torn Ukraine to train emergency medical technicians.

CAP's New Chief Diversity Officer Sees 'A Journey, Not a Destination'

Dr. Elizabeth Medina, Civil Air Patrol’s new chief diversity officer, strongly believes the work of diversity, education, and inclusion — DEI — “is a journey, not a destination, and if we are doing it right, we are going to be doing it the rest of our lives.”

In filling the newly created post, Medina said, she’s committed to ensuring CAP focuses on the vison of embedding DEI throughout the entire organization in alignment with its mission. She will lead in the creation and execution of a plan that will establish values-based goals to be achieved on local, regional, and national levels.

In case you missed the news in an earlier Board of Governors' announcement this morning, Civil Air Patrol will soon have a new Chief Operating Officer, John W. Moose Desmarais Sr.

His selection to the top executive post at National Headquarters came in a special CAP email from retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Kevin McLaughlin, BoG chair, who cited Desmarais for “his impressive record of Civil Air Patrol service both as an employee as well as a volunteer.” He added, “John’s background and experience will help him be a highly effective COO.”

First Air Force elevated Civil Air Patrol's Sean Fuller story earlier this month, posting it on the 1AF Facebook page. Fuller, a former Missouri Wing cadet, is the Gateway program international partner manager for Artemis, an international effort by the U.S., Canada, Japan, and the European Space Agency and other international public and private partners. Artemis is intended not only to allow humans to live on the moon but also to serve as a way station on the way to Mars.

Cyber Training Opportunities Available

In 2020, CAP entered into a partnership with Cisco Networking Academy. Free, quality cyber education for all CAP members continues, with the 2023 Learn-A-Thon, starting on Jan. 23 and running through Feb. 10. All CAP members are encouraged to register and participate.

The course is Networking Basics, and upon completion, members will earn a digital badge to share on various social media platforms. Col. Brett Dolnick, the National Cyber Mission Team’s leader, said, “The education that CAP members receive for free from the course, whether for a future career or for their own personal knowledge, is well worth their time, as we continue to innovate throughout CAP using cutting-edge technology as well as in our daily lives.”

Additionally, the next Cisco Networking Academy cohort has opened. Once members complete the Learn-A-Thon, they should consider enrolling in one of the 12 courses, available in both English and Spanish.

The Learn-A-Thon and NetAcad course registration links are available at cyber.cap.gov.
