Civil Air Patrol Orders 17 New Cessna Aircraft
Civil Air Patrol’s long-standing collaboration with Textron Aviation Inc. continues as the Cessna manufacturer was recently awarded a new contract for the sale of 17 piston-engine aircraft.

Using 2020 fiscal year funds, CAP agreed to purchase 11 Skyhawk 172s, five Skylane 182Ts and one Turbo Stationair HD T206H. They will join a fleet of nearly 550 Cessna aircraft in use by CAP, making it the world’s largest Cessna piston operator.

“From search and rescue, to disaster relief and homeland security, the missions Civil Air Patrol undertakes daily are as broad as their footprint across the U.S. We are honored that Cessna aircraft continue to be the organization’s platform of choice for these crucial operations,” said Bob Gibbs, vice president, special missions sales, for Textron Aviation.
Wyo. Wing Delivers Test Samples, Kits
The Wyoming Wing's Teton County Senior Squadron flew 470 COVID-19 test samples and three boxes of test kits from St. John’s Medical Center in Teton County to the Wyoming Public Health Lab in Cheyenne on May 29.

The squadron conducted the mission in coordination with Teton County Emergency Management Coordinator Rich Ochs and the state Office of Homeland Security.

The samples, in two large sealed coolers, were transported to Miley Memorial Field by Public Health’s Stephanie Lund and loaded on a Civil Air Patrol Cessna piloted by 1st Lt. Alex Heil. Heil flew to Cheyenne Regional Airport, where the samples were unloaded and delivered to Public Health’s Cari Sloma.

Heil’s return flight was delayed by severe weather conditions near Big Piney, requiring an overnight stay in Cheyenne. Heil completed the return flight May 30 with the empty sample coolers, avoiding windy conditions to land safely back in Big Piney.
CAP Stages Surprise Birthday for Young Conn. Man
Members of Civil Air Patrol's Connecticut Wing, joined by state and local law enforcement and emergency personnel, surprised Robby Porter and his devoted mom, Sherri Zummo, with a drive-by birthday parade on June 2.

The parade in celebration of the young Mystic man's 22nd birthday was the idea of 1st Lt. Jay LaVoie, the wing's logistics and transportation officer, who saw a recent Connecticut Families TV report detailing Zummo's struggles with her intellectually-disabled and deaf son since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

LaVoie sought and quickly received permission from Wing Commander Col. James Ridley to bring in the wing's fleet of Ford Expeditions, Robby's favorite, for a birthday parade. The CAP Expeditions were joined by fire and police vehicles and a ambulance, which made for a festive celebration, as seen in this report from WTNH-TV in New Haven:
The celebration elicited a heartfelt response from Zummo. "Hi Jay, I just wanted to let you know the true impact what you have done has had in our lives," she said. "Robby has had near perfect behavior since Tuesday. The last two nights he has also slept very well, which means I’ve had two nights of seven hours of sleep. This hasn’t happened in over 14 weeks. Robby is STILL beaming! Thank you! Thank you for what you’ve done!"

Ridley, who led the parade, said he has also received texts and Facebook messages from Zummo, Robby's sister and others that make him very proud of LaVoie and other CAP members who pitched in to help. "Wow, we have touched more people in a positive manner than any of us could have expected. This is amazing!" he said.
