Powell River Tourism
If you're visiting Powell River for PRISMA 2015 or are a native of this West Coast oasis, check out our Top 10 Things to Do in Powell River (in no particular order):
1. Explore the Hiking Trails
Powell River is home to the Sunshine Coast Trail, a 180 km expanse of well-managed trail stretching from Lund to Saltery Bay. Whether you're an avid hiker or someone who prefers hitting the trails on two wheels, there are one-day and multi-day hikes for you. The trails weave through the lush green forests alongside creeks, offering breathtaking views of waterfalls and pools. My personal favourite? The Appleton Creek trail.
2. Go Kayaking
There are a variety of kayak tours, lessons and trips that you can take from Lund and Willingdon Beach. There's nothing quite like feeling the calm ocean beneath your paddle as you glide beneath the sun on a clear, summer day!
3. Visit the Historic Townsite
Powell River's Townsite neighbourhood is a unique coastal community designated as a National Historic District of Canada in 1995, one of only seven in Canada and the only one in western Canada. In the Historic Townsite you will find over 400 original buildings contained within the borders of the 1910 town plan. Some highlights include beautiful heritage homes; the Patricia Theatre, Canada's longest-running movie theatre; the Postmaster's House; Dwight Hall; and the Rodmay Heritage Hotel, to name a few. Of course, another stop to check out here is Townsite Brewing--Powell River's own award-winning microbrewery!
4. Spend a day on Savary Island
Powell River locals know Savary Island as the Mexico of BC. White sandy beaches and warm water rim the island, providing a beautiful getaway in the sun. There is a water taxi service operating out of Lund that can take you to and from the island throughout the day.
5. Visit Lund
Lund is Powell River's charming harbour village, where approximately 300 people live year-round. Make sure you check out the bakery, where you'll find cinnamon buns with a unique Powell River flare. There are $2 walking tours available to ensure you make the most of the picturesque views Lund has to offer.
6. Stroll Willingdon Beach
You'll recognize this city-centre beach as the venue for PRISMA's annual Celebration of the Senses event. When there aren't special events going on, Willingdon Beach is still a great place to visit for a walk through the historic trails, a run through the water park, an ice-cream or round of mini golf.
7. Wander along Marine Avenue
Marine Avenue is the heart of Powell River: a stretch of highway linking its northern and southern points along the ocean. Catch the sunset while strolling the Sea Wall just below the road, or go for a walk along the street and browse some of Powell River's finest restaurants, art galleries, boutiques and tourist shops.
8. Ride Bikes around Inland Lake Provincial Park
The 13km trail circling Inland Lake is perfect for biking on a summer's day. Hop off and jump in the lake to cool down, or enjoy a picnic while soaking in the view.
9. Check out the Farmer's Market
Every Saturday and Sunday morning in the summer, the Farmer's Market brings together local farmers, artists, performers, bakers, crafters, jewellers, and more! With various kinds of entertainment, from live bands to puppet shows, the Farmer's Market is a place anyone would love.
10. Just Take it All In
Whether it's catching a sunrise or sunset at the wharf, or stargazing on a clear summer night, everyone visiting Powell River will appreciate this small town's big nature.
