Don't have any time to volunteer? Consider making a donation. Help us with our commitment to offer outstanding educational opportunities and musical performances while making Powell River the go-to summer symphony destination in North America. Donate here.
or Donate to our Silent Auction! During the Festival concerts, PRISMA will be holding a silent auction to raise funds for the program. We are looking for donations for silent auction items. We ask that businesses donate items of at least $150 value in order to have a good selection of items and value. The first items
donated for PRISMA's silent auction are a beautiful original painting by
local artist Alexene Silver and a romantic dinner, overnight stay and breakfast for two at Herondell Bed and Breakfast. Thank you, Alexene and the Hollmanns!
Anything you can give will help. Whether you contribute time, money or silent auction items we truly appreciate your generosity.

ARTHUR ARNOLD
If music is a universal language, then Arthur Arnold is as fluent as can be. As a renowned conductor, Arnold's favourite instrument is the orchestra itself. "There's a lot of control with the hands to the group," he said, "I really play the orchestra." He especially enjoys "inviting" different sections of the orchestra to begin playing throughout a piece and seeing the enjoyment the musicians feel from this interaction.
Arnold's career as a conductor really took off in 2001 following his debut with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. Soon after the concert in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Arnold was appointed principal guest conductor. Recently, Arnold was promoted to Chief Conductor of the orchestra.
Arnold received the majority of his musical training in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, where he studied the cello. In the United Kingdom, he studied with Diego Masson at the Dartington International Summer School. In Amsterdam, he studied closely with Dmitri Ferschtman.
Following his studies on the cello, Arnold began studying orchestral conducting in the Netherlands under the guidance of Anton Kersjes. Arnold's hard work paid off when he received the Prins Bernhard Foundation award in 1996 to study at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Italy with Myung-Whun Chung. Later, Arnold was honoured with the Busenhart Morgan-Evans award to participate in masterclasses with Jorma Panula, Diego Masson, and Gianluigi Gelmetti. Arnold was also presented with numerous opportunities as an Assistant Conductor prior to his debut with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra.
The European origins of Arnold's education and experience have indeed embedded themselves in his technique as many critics refer to his traditionally European styles of balance, musical phrasing and clarity of texture. Arnold is also well known as a specialist in Russian repertoire.
Arnold's conducting has also brought him overseas to Canada, specifically as Orchestral Director at the former Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific, International Choral
Kathaumixw, the orchestra at the Glenn Gould School of Music and, now, PRISMA.
Seated at his piano covered in sheets of musical scores, Arnold explains how he works with the complicated music. "The piano helps me to learn the scores." By learning the score with the help of his piano, Arnold can effectively conduct the orchestra. "Of course, being a conductor, doing all the symphonic music, it is about the orchestra," he said.
"For me, it's so important that the symphony music in Powell River continues," Arnold said, "and I'm so excited that it will." His happiness is also in part due to the "amazing group of knowledgeable people that took it on."
Arnold's work as both an Orchestral Director and Conductor has granted him a worldwide reputation. Shalom News in Moscow reported in 2010 that Arnold was "one of the rare conductors who not only possesses a flawless technique, but also inspires the orchestra, giving the individual musicians creative freedom." A PRISMA guest artist on leave for this year, Martin Chalifour, praised how Arnold "stresses seriousness and tradition, communicates clearly, and with a great sense of style."
"This is the most amazing thing to do because you connect people," Arnold said with excitement, "not only the students, but the students with the audience."
Experience this exciting and inspirational connection from seeing Arnold conduct an orchestra by attending PRISMA's concerts on June 21, 22, 26 and 28.
