COUNCIL TRANSPORTATION CHAIR YDANIS RODRIGUEZ STATEMENT ON UBER ANNOUNCEMENT OF IN-APP TIPPING OPTION FOR DRIVERS

New York, NY -- On Tuesday, June 20th, following the announcement by Uber that they will be rolling out an in-app tipping option for riders to tip their drivers, NYC Council Transportation Chair Ydanis Rodriguez issued the following statement:

"Uber drivers in New York City and across the country are finally getting a relief with this welcome news. For too long Uber has restricted the ability for riders to tip their drivers by not including this feature on the app. That is why the NYC Council Transportation Committee plans to hear legislation this week that I introduced aiming to require this function be made available through the app. While I am glad to hear that Uber will be rolling this service out in the coming months, I will continue to pursue legislation to require this of all car-for-hire companies operating in New York City. Codifying this important measure will make sure companies cannot change their policies on a whim, and that future administrations cannot change rules currently under discussion. Our hard-working drivers deserve to be treated fairly and earn easy-to-convey gratuity for their quality service. With rising cost of living and more drivers competing for fares than ever before, this is a positive step and reaffirms the dignity of so many who work in our great city."

Council Member Rodriguez is the Lead Sponsor for Intro 1646, a Bill in the NYC Council that would require tipping options be made available in whatever form of payment is otherwise accepted for the For-Hire Sector. This includes in-app payment used by companies such as Uber. The bill will be up for a hearing on June 22nd at 11:00 AM at City Hall. Prior to the hearing, Council Member Rodriguez will stand with Uber drivers on the steps of City Hall to issue their support for the legislation.
