Round Table's In-Person Event Exploring AI is a Hit

Four top thinkers define Artificial Intelligence and discuss both the promise and pitfalls of the powerful and disruptive technology

“AI is the collective knowledge of humanity captured through the internet.”

—Sunil Rajaraman, myhamlet.com

“AI will not impact staffing levels at all. I think it will unlock wild creativity. That is what I am seeing. That is my hope.”—Mallory Cloutier, Highwire PR

“[AI] is all around us, but for years we haven't really controlled it. The companies that developed it controlled it and they worked with our data, hopefully to serve us but also to serve themselves.”—Matt Burton, Savant-AI

“So what are three AI tools that you use on a daily basis? And don't steal my answer!" —Warner Johnston, 5 Borough Communications

In a special evening that included both networking and a panel discussion, PR Round Table relaunched its legacy of offering cutting-edge forums for longtime members and the greater PR community at “Innovation Unleashed: PR Practitioners Grapple With AI” on March 28. The event at Golden Gate University was presented by the Round Table in partnership with Golden Gate University’s Center for Business Innovation’s InSight Series and the International Association of Business Communicators, San Francisco Bay Area.

The panelists included Sunil Rajaraman, Forbes AI writer and tech entrepreneur; Mallory Cloutier, Highwire PR SVP, who partners with high-profile clients on the topic of AI and the intersection of responsible AI and DEI; Matt Burton, a Golden Gate University adjunct professor who runs Savant-AI Bootcamp; and Warner Johnston, founder of 5 Borough Communications, an AI enthusiast and member of the interim SFPRRT board.

Each panelist shared insights into their work and experiences with AI.

  • Sunil Rajaraman discussed his work with Hamlet, a company focused on making public information from city council meetings more accessible.
  • Mallory Cloutier talked with enthusiasm about her agency's use of AI in their work, emphasizing transparency and responsible use.
  • Matt Burton shared his journey into AI and how his company focuses on teaching and consulting on AI adoption.

The discussion also delved into AI's presence in everyday life, its applications in various fields like archaeology, and the challenges of AI bias and diversity. Throughout the discussion, topics like AI's impact on society, the use of AI in different languages, the pitfalls of AI, and the importance of transparency and diversity in AI development were explored. The conversation highlighted the growing significance of AI and the need for responsible and inclusive practices in its development and deployment.
