Robert Luna Sworn In as Los Angeles County Sheriff
December 3: Sheriff Robert Luna took the oath of office on Saturday during a ceremony at the Hall of Administration and officially assumed his duties as the 34th Sheriff of Los Angeles County on Monday (12/5/22). PPOA President Nancy Escobedo, First Vice President Jose Rios, Board Member Chris Lee and Executive Director Wayne Quint Jr. attended the ceremony on behalf of PPOA.

Lindsey Horvath and Hilda Solis Take Oaths as Los Angeles County Supervisors
December 5: Lindsey Horvath (District 3) and Hilda Solis (District 1) took their oaths of office as Los Angeles County Supervisors on Monday. Supervisor Horvath is the newest member of the County’s governing body. Following the ceremony for Supervisor Horvath, her colleague, Supervisor Solis, was sworn in to her third and final 4-year term on the Board.
Contract Ratification Ballots Mailed to Unit 631/632 Members
December 6: Salary contract ratification ballots for PPOA members in Unit 631/632 were delivered to the post office on Tuesday. As a reminder, completed ballots must be received by 5:00PM on December 23, 2022.
PPOA Legislative Committee Meeting
December 6: The PPOA Legislative Committee hosted a teleconference with our full-time Sacramento legislative representatives — Lang, Hansen, Giroux and Kidane — to engage in the monthly discussion about legislation that impacts or could potentially impact PPOA members and public safety employees statewide. At this meeting, committee members focused on goals and objectives for the new 2-year legislative session. Assembly members and Senators were sworn in to office on December 5th and at least 37 of the 120 elected legislators are new to Sacramento.

Meeting participants from PPOA included President Escobedo, Board Member Gerry Garcia, Legislative Consultant Art Reddy and Executive Director Quint.

Coalition of County Unions Meeting
December 7: President Escobedo attended a videoconference with other Coalition of County Unions (CCU) member organizations to discuss legislative changes regarding the California Family Rights Act (CFRA). On September 29, 2022, Governor Newsom signed into law AB 1041, which expands CFRA to include a “designated person” among the class of people for whom an employee may take leave in order to provide care. AB 1041 goes into effect on January 1, 2023.
Custody Assistant Class 107 Graduation
December 9: The graduation ceremony for Custody Assistant Class 107 was hosted at Biscailuz Center yesterday and President Escobedo was honored to represent PPOA at this event. We offer our congratulations to every member of Class 107 for the teamwork and dedication required to complete the academy and begin their promising new careers.

Support for East LA Station Charitable Event
PPOA was proud to support the recent East LA Station toy giveaway event at Belvedere Park. This very worthy cause resulted in nearly 1500 toys being distributed and hundreds of meals provided to the community.

Passing of Former PPOA Staff Member Marlyne Rinaldi
We were truly saddened to learn of the recent passing of former PPOA Labor Representative Marlyne Rinaldi. She was well known among members and department executives as a proven, experienced union rep with nearly two decades of service for ALADS and PPOA, respectively. Marlyne retired from PPOA in 2013 and passed on 11/24/22.

PPOA extends sincere condolences to the Rinaldi family and Marlyne's many friends throughout the Sheriff's Department. At this time, no services have been scheduled.
PPOA Steer Clear Program for Members
PPOA wants to ensure all members make it home safely while celebrating with family and friends during the holidays. Our annual “Steer Clear” program offers reimbursements to members of this Association who use UBER or LYFT between November 24, 2022 and January 1, 2023. The reimbursement offer is limited to one round-trip or two one-way trips not exceeding 30 miles total. Valid for UberX and Lyft Standard rides only. Tips not included. Offer limited to active, full-dues paying PPOA members. 

If you plan to enjoy adult beverages this season, please do so responsibly. And if you’re not in condition to drive safely, make sure to use Uber or Lyft and email your receipt to info@ppoa.com (using your personal non-County email address) for reimbursement. Please include your full name and employee number in the email.

PPOA members have long benefitted from our longtime affiliation with the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), the world's largest organization of law enforcement officers, with more than 364,000 members in more than 2,100 lodges nationwide.
