Thousands Hit the Pavement for Baker-to-Vegas;
PPOA and ALADS Continue Partnership with LASD Homicide for Annual BBQ
March 23-24: PPOA members were among thousands of peace officers running 120 miles through the Mojave Desert last weekend. The Baker-to-Vegas Challenge Cup Relay brought together more than 250 teams from agencies across the nation and a few from around the globe. We congratulate all of the athletes (click here to see unofficial race results) and their invaluable support teams. We're also grateful to everyone who joined us after the race for the BBQ co-hosted by LASD Homicide Bureau, PPOA and ALADS.

PPOA representatives in attendance included President Steve Johnson, 1st Vice President Jay Chapman, 2nd Vice President Tony Coleman, Board Treasurer Joyce Kato, Board Member Luis Orozco, and union staff.
Salute to Legendary Labor Leader
March 25: PPOA was proud to acknowledge the legacy of legendary labor leader and workers' rights champion César Chávez on the County holiday named in his honor. This annual holiday was secured by Los Angeles County unions during fringe benefits negotiations in 2015.
LA County Federation 'House of Labor' Meeting
March 25: Los Angeles County Federation of Labor members, including PPOA President Steve Johnson and Executive Director Wayne Quint Jr., gathered on Monday evening for the monthly "House of Labor" meeting. These sessions help County union leaders compare notes and analyze the many issues impacting public employees throughout the County.

The County Federation of Labor includes more than 300 unions, representing more than 800,000 members.
Meet and Confer re: Privacy Rights for Crime Analysts
March 27: PPOA representatives met with LASD executives regarding the privacy rights of Crime Analysts as they apply to the California Public Records Act (CPRA) request of their personal information. PPOA made the original request to meet and confer on the requirements for an exemption for the Crime Analyst classification and this marked the second meeting to discuss the issue.

Meeting participants from PPOA included Unit 621 Board Member Joe Walker, President Steve Johnson, Executive Director Wayne Quint Jr., and union legal counsel.
LASD Women's History Month Reception
March 27: President Steve Johnson was honored to attend the Women's History Month Celebration Reception hosted at the Hall of Justice. The event acknowledged the contributions women have made to the Sheriff's Department while recognizing specific achievements of honorees present at the reception.
PPOA Legislative Committee Meeting
March 28: PPOA Legislative Committee members took part in a teleconference with our Sacramento legislative representatives — Lang, Hansen, Giroux and Kidane — for the monthly discussion about legislative proposals in the current 2023-2024 session that potentially impact PPOA members and public safety employees statewide.

Meeting participants from PPOA included President Steve Johnson, Legislative Consultant Art Reddy, and Executive Director Wayne Quint Jr.

PPOA has a proven track record of impactful legislative strategies that stretches back more than 60 years and has dramatically improved the rights and benefits of generations of PPOA members.
California Department of Justice Investigation re: LASD
March 28: PPOA sent an email to members on Thursday to report that we received the message Sheriff Luna sent to LASD personnel earlier that day regarding the ongoing 2021 California Department of Justice investigation and potential settlement proposals dealing with multiple Sheriff's Department policies and practices.

Please know that PPOA immediately reached out to County and Department executives in order to bring all parties together to meet and confer regarding any proposed changes that impact PPOA members. We will continue to update members as this process moves forward and want to assure you that your union will continue to aggressively fight to protect the safety and best interests of PPOA members.
Honored to Support the Family of Fallen LADA Sergeant Emilio Guerrero
March 29: President Steve Johnson and 1st Vice President Jay Chapman had the distinct honor of meeting with one of the daughters of fallen LADA Sergeant Emilio Guerrero (EOW: 10/08/23) in order to present a check from the Star & Shield Foundation with proceeds from fundraising coordinated by this Association.

Sergeant Guerrero began his law enforcement career in 1994 as a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy, graduating with Class #286. In 2006, he joined the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office Bureau of Investigation, where he served with distinction and commitment for 17 years. Tragically, Sergeant Guerrero and his beloved wife, Annabel, both died in an automobile accident in Downey last October. They are survived by three daughters.
Fraternal Order of Police News Update
PPOA members have long benefitted from our affiliation with the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), the world's largest organization of law enforcement officers, with more than 374,000 members in more than 2,100 lodges nationwide. All active PPOA members are part of California FOP Lodge 1.

Important news regarding FOP membership for retired PPOA members: When a sworn PPOA member retires and wishes to reactivate his/her FOP member benefits, the following step must be taken: To reactivate your membership as a retired peace officer, you will need to pay FOP annual dues of $40 for 2024. To do so, please send an email to the FOP Lodge 1 Secretary at wmwestermann@sbcglobal.net

Please make it a point to check out Washington Watch — a weekly news update provided by the National FOP. We encourage PPOA members to stay up to date on the legislative news and activity impacting public safety personnel nationwide.
