Welcome to another edition of PORCH Chapel Hill-Carrboro’s quarterly newsletter, where you can stay up to date on everything happening within our organization.

It’s been quite busy around here! Get caught up on some of the latest headlines:

In December, it was announced that we received a GSK IMPACT Award! We are so proud and thankful. The award comes with $50,000 to support our mission dedicated to improving health outcomes. Learn more here.

We are in the process of hiring a full-time program manager to maintain and develop all aspects of our Food for Families, Food for Pantries, and Food for Schools programs. Please help us spread the word! All of the details about this full-time position can be found here.

We are hitting the ground running in 2022 by welcoming new board members, who are already bringing so much to our organization. We are always seeking new board/committee members. If you want to learn more about available opportunities, reach out to us at chc@porchcommunities.org.

This fall, Weaver Street Market’s Round Up! fundraising campaign for PORCH Chapel Hill-Carrboro raised $32,883 for our organization. These proceeds will allow us to purchase fresh produce for our Food for Families program. Weaver Street Market has provided $348,000 for PORCH over the past seven years thanks to this successful program.

Meet a Neighborhood Coordinator

Candice Goerger first inquired about becoming the Neighborhood Coordinator for her Carrboro street, but when she realized there were other streets nearby that didn’t have anyone serving in the role, she decided to take on more. We are so glad she did!

Behind the Scenes of Our Partnership with Redeye Worldwide

One Tuesday afternoon each month, a four-hour window of time offers a comprehensive view of the way many hands – and many partnerships – make light work for PORCH.

In the airy break room of the Redeye Worldwide independent music warehouse (which owns Yep Roc Records) in Hillsborough, about 15 people work diligently to fill boxes of fresh produce.

“Our team loves being involved in an ongoing, committed way, so this is very meaningful to us,” says Glenn Dicker, co-owner of Redeye.

The raging Omicron variant is now demonstrating clearly that the pandemic is far from over, and the economic suffering that comes with it is very real for members of our community. An overwhelming majority of participants in our Food for Families Program say they sometimes, often, or always worry about having enough food to feed their families, and 71 percent report less income due to the pandemic.

It costs $50 to provide one family with fresh food for a week. Can you help us serve more families in 2022? Consider becoming a sustainer by setting up monthly donations to PORCH.
