PNA MEMBER NEWS

PNA Foundation Executive Director Tanya Henderson, America’s Newspapers CEO Dean Ridings and PNA President and CEO Bill Cotter

PNA attends America’s Newspapers Mega-Conference in Phoenix, AZ

During the conference, PNA President and CEO Bill Cotter and PNA Foundation Executive Director Tanya Henderson participated in a variety of informative sessions. This included a presentation on strategic philanthropy that was particularly relevant as the PNAF is actively building fundraising and philanthropic partnerships and programs to support our members’ digital transformation and journalism sustainability in their newsrooms.

They also spent time with several PNA members who were in attendance, including Bill Nutting from Ogden Newspapers, Tammy Schuey from the Butler Eagle, Brandon Eyerly from the Press Enterprise in Bloomsburg and Matt Miller and Joe Lawrence from Trib Total Media.

The power of second chances – a new lease on life at the Indiana Gazette

Jason Stepp of the Indiana Gazette made a commitment to himself, and others, to turn his life around after years of addiction. His second chance gave him the ability to regain control of his life. But it also gave him a moment of clarity, that he could “pay it forward” and help others.

Spotlight PA selected as a 2023 Investigative Reporters and Editors Award finalist

Ed Mahon, Sarah Hutchins, Stephen Kearse, Jeff Rummel and Matt Dempsey of Spotlight PA are being recognized for their "Cannabis Card Game." News organizations suing the government to liberate public records, that’s nothing new. But the government suing news organizations to keep them secret? That’s an outrage. Three cheers for the Spotlight PA team that stared down the challenge in court.

Teamsters, Post-Gazette reach strike settlement

One of five unions that has been on strike at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for 18 months has agreed to settle with the company. Twenty-three striking members of Teamsters Local 211/205 have voted unanimously to accept a labor dispute settlement agreement.

PNA TEAM SPOTLIGHT

Teresa Shaak, senior manager, PNA and PNA Foundation Services

What made you get into this industry in the first place?

I joined the PNA/PNA Foundation team nearly 21 years ago with hopes of making a difference. I love the variety of things we do to help our members succeed and celebrate all aspects of their organizations.

Do you have any advice for someone just starting out?

Watch and learn from the best in your field. Be open minded to new ideas and different ways of thinking to gain new perspectives. And always be ready to continue learning through new challenges and opportunities.

If you could have done anything differently, would you?

I love where I am right now. I probably should’ve worked more on my self-confidence and self-assurance earlier on in my career.
