PNA TEAM SPOTLIGHT

Dave Martens, immediate past chairman

PNA Foundation Board of Trustees

What made you get into this industry?

As a freshman at Michigan State University, I had the opportunity to go to work for my hometown Lansing State Journal promoting the youth talent exhibit and science fair. I traveled to Central Michigan high schools finding students creating arts crafts and science fair projects and wrote feature stories about their good works. The following fall I was offered a full-time job working with the newspaper’s public service programs such as newspaper in education, journalism awards banquet and public speaking about how newspapers operate. It took me five and a half years to earn my bachelor’s degree … but I also had five years working for a newspaper when I graduated. I was hooked.

Do you have any advice for someone just starting out?

There is always room for one more good person in every profession. I see journalism as a calling like teaching and view it as a critical part of our democracy. People rely on trusted reporters to provide accurate information about the world about them.

If you could have done anything differently, would you?

I'm not sure I could have done things differently. I always felt opportunities came my way more often than I sought them out.
