PNA TEAM SPOTLIGHT

William (Bill) Cotter, PNA president & CEO

What made you get into this industry?

I graduated from Clarion University in 1984 with a communications degree and was working in retail when I had a discussion with a friend of mine about his dad’s window company. His dad was advertising in the Pittsburgh Pennysaver, and they were looking for an entry-level advertising sales rep. I thought that would be fun, applied and got the job. I spent 12 years at the Pennysaver, made lifelong friends and then moved into the newspaper side with the Pittsburgh Post Gazette and Trib Total Media for the next 25 years in various sales leadership positions.

Do you have any advice for someone just starting out?

Be flexible, be patient, work hard and dress for success. The news media industry is evolving, challenging, and exciting which is exactly what you want in a career. Working in the media industry is such a meaningful profession and so important to the fabric of every community as we inform, educate, and entertain citizens with important information on multiple platforms.

If you could have done anything differently, would you?

After almost 40 years, I wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve learned so much, helped so many clients grow their businesses, trained and developed sales leaders and sales professionals and had the opportunity to work with special, passionate people.
