“Newspaper in Education programs are extremely important to our future as an industry and as a business. Newspapers in today’s business climate need to go out and recruit their future readers and advertisers and what better way to do that than putting our product into the hands of young readers,” said Harry Hartman, publisher of the Gettysburg Times and immediate past chairman of the PNA Board of Directors.
One notable event within the NIE program is the annual Design-An-Ad sales promotion held each March.
“You couldn’t be sad when he was around because he’d often say something so hilarious that it broke up whatever funk you were in,” said Denise Clay-Murray, a veteran Philadelphia journalist.
“Powerfully Persistent’’ is the 2024 theme for this national day of action, conceived by the Student Press Law Center in Washington, D.C., to celebrate “the contributions of student journalists and the need to support their independence without censorship or threat to their advisers,” according to the SPLC website.
