Dear Sara,
This is an urgent call to action for the ECE community!!
Did you know, San Francisco faces a $290 million budget loss and eyes have turned to Baby Prop C, a fund for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, as an option to close city budget issues?
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors need to see how many we can turn out and how strongly we disagree with the mayor's current proposals to take away Prop C funding (Eng, 中文, Español).
The Mayor has unfortunately put forth two proposals to make changes to Prop C that will reduce ongoing Prop C funding (and the Prop C balance that was collected but could not be released while Prop C was in a legal battle for three years). The two proposals are:
- Change tax rules of Baby Prop C by exempting big businesses making over $1M in commercial rent from contributing to our child care community. The SF Controller states this will decrease child care revenue by $17 million annually during tough times when ECE is already struggling to make ends meet.
- Reduce the amount of money the city is legally obligated to invest in child care annually, currently $92.7 million. The proposal reduces this to $72.7 million for the 1st year and $82.7 million for the 2nd year, a $30 million cut to child care funding over the next two years.

It is urgent and imperative that we act. We estimate these proposals resulting in a loss of $150 million over the 7 years proposed cuts timeline, and putting our child care baseline deemed useless if we let them change the baseline whenever they choose. We can’t let this happen!
As CPAC and the SF ECE Advocacy Coalition we are asking you to take as many of the following actions as you can to protect Prop C:
-
(30 seconds) Send a direct email to your supervisors automatically by visiting tinyurl.com/Protectsfbabies, it only takes 30 seconds!
-
(5 minutes) Call and email your supervisor(s) who represent(s) the area where you live and/or work and the Mayor’s Office in San Francisco to let them know you are opposed to both proposals. You can find call and email scripts as well as your supervisor’s contact information by visiting tinyurl.com/PropCaction
-
(2 minutes) Tweet your supervisors and the mayor to let them know you want them to oppose both measures. You can find all Twitter handles at tinyurl.com/ECEbos, in the Take Action Folder.
-
(2 minutes) Sign up for in-person community actions at San Francisco City Hall! Sign up at tinyurl.com/sfbabiesmatter or email info@ecesf.org for more information and next steps (Eng, 中文, Español).
- (5 minutes) Share this flyer and encourage 5 friends or family members—and all at your child care site—to take actions with you. It takes a whole village!

With the link above you will find call scripts, public comment talking, sample emails, sample tweets, and more! *We are having all items translated to Spanish (Español) and Chinese (中文), and will share these by the end of the week!
