2018 has been a busy year in laying the groundwork for PICMG's specification updates and new initiatives. Take COM Express for example, which saw several new products with the Type 7 specification for 10G server-grade performance. Efforts are already underway for a COM specification geared at HPC (High Performance Computing) applications. On the other front, PICMG has adopted VITA's "Rugged COM Express" effort. Our members are tasked to complete this specification.
MicroTCA/AMC will see an updated specification in early 2019 with 40GbE efforts wrapping up. cPCI Serial Space is ratified and interest is brewing in more efforts on the cPCI Serial front.
The biggest effort from PICMG has been "IIoT for the Sensor Domain". A firm foundation has been laid with a collaborative agreement with DMTF to utilize their Redfish(R) APIs. We showed a proof-of-concept demo at Sensors Expo in June, gathering interest from the sensor community. We continued to evangelize the effort at the Hannover Fair in Chicago and the IoT Expo in Santa Clara, among other efforts. Meanwhile, the technical discussions have progressed with the specification effort expected to launch in early 2019.
A lot of other back-end work has kept us busy with the GDPR email challenges, updating the Product Showcase on the Web site, and developing IIoT content. 2019 promises to be a busy and fruitful year with exciting new specifications on the way and increased activity/participation in existing ones.
