PETIT WEEK IN WINE | May 8th - May 12th 2024

TASTING FLIGHT FEATURING:

This week we bring you a favorite category of white wine and personal passion - Burgundy!

Every year, I typically take a group to Burgundy, as it's the wine I personally enjoy. And with all the Burgundy hype of late, along with low yields in recent vintages, pricing continues its upward spiral. We are seeing things finally level off a bit, but let's face it, the world wants Burgundy - and in particular WHITE burgundy.

So this week we're bringing the baseline wines which carry the 'Bourgogne' level or 'regional' classification. The challenge was to bring great white burgundy value to our clients, so we're focused on the regional wines sourced from a stone's throw away from the iconic villages we love - Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, and Chassagne-Montrachet.

Our $22 Tasting Flight this week brings you four White Burgundy producers with extensive 1er Cru & Grand Cru holdings that take no shortcuts in producing their entry-level Bourgogne Blanc. These highly sought-after bottlings are our favorites - lending incredible balance between venerable quality and affordability All wines featured are $55 and under!

If you have fallen in love with Burgundy as much as I have, then you don't want to miss this opportunity to sample these FOUR Bourgogne Blancs to find a new favorite... no wrong answers here - they are all winners in my book.

Please read on for all the details including Tasting Flight hours, the selections, and the producers.

Cheers, and best wishes to all the moms out there as we celebrate Mother's Day this Sunday.

COLIN BAROLLET

Colin Barollet is a producer located in the celebrated Meursault region of Burgundy, it dates back to 1879. The 'label' is known for producing wines of elegance, finesse, and value! And honestly, we have uncovered very little about this ominous label, but our theory is that it's negociant-produced by a young frenchman named Colin Barollet who likely came from the lineage of negociants from the late 19th century (Dr. Arthur Barollet, then later by Albert Barollet in the 1940s), who likely had ties to the village of Savigny-Les-Beaune, near Meursult. I suppose the history is less important here, but still has me scraching my head. Bottom line, briliant wine for the money and likely a direct import label. Free pour for geneolgists who love wine and can tell us more...!

DOMAINE ALAIN CHAVY

The Chavy family is well established in Burgundy, having had roots in Puligny-Montrachet for over 200 years. They have a well-deserved reputation for creating elegant white Burgundy. Alain Chavy’s well-placed 10-hectares were formed in 2003 when he split his father’s vineyards, Domaine Gérard Chavy, with his brother, Jean-Louis. Alain’s vineyards cover good village parcels alongside two of the finest premier cru sites in the village: Folatières and Clavoillon, plus a small holding of Les Pucelles. He also boasts the deepest, underground cellar in Puligny - an impressive 5.5 metres deep in an area which is well-known for its high water table. His has gained a reputation for traditionally styled, racy Chardonnay which is a fine expression of Puligny-Montrachet.

XAVIER MONNOT

Xavier Monnot is a leading producer in Meursault whose winemaking style emphasizes purity of fruit, elegance, and complexity. Xavier can trace his mother’s ancestors, the Monniers, back to 1723, with six generations of winegrowing. Xavier took over in 1994 after completing his oenological studies and began replanting parcels with a combination of selection massale from old vines and new clones, and updated the cellar with modern equipment. Prior to the release of the 2005 vintage, the property was known as Domaine René Monnier (Xavier's grandfather). In 2005, along with improvements in the vineyard and cellar, Xavier began bottling his wines under his own label.

DOMAINE GABRIEL & PAUL JOUARD

Paul Jouard is the 7th generation winemaker in this storied family. He has been making the family wines since 1992. He is a throwback to the Burgundy winemakers of old. Paul is a delight to know and will challenge all our french language skills. Paul enjoys the solitary life in the vineyards - he says it gives him a lot of time to think clearly so he can concentrate on the other aspects of winemaking when he's in his cellars. He's really a one-man shop and I just love this guy.

Paul has a small but modern cuverie and cellar, but he says technology cannot make good wine. What technology allows him to do is to better organize his work so that he can maximize the flavors that are given by the grapes and the terroir. So, instead of changing the juice and stamping it with his winemaking technique, Paul gives the grapes and the soil every possible opportunity to express themselves to their fullest. Ask us about his stellar village and 1er cru labels too!

COLIN BAROLLET

Bourgogne Blanc 2022

Burgundy, FR

$30 btl/retail

Colin Barollet is a micro negociant located in the celebrated Meursault region of Burgundy, it dates back to 1879. The Domaine is known for producing wines of elegance, finesse, and balance (without breaking the bank).

Varietal: 100% Chardonnay grown in clay & limestone soils. Follows the traditional vinification, the grapes are pressed immediately upon arrival at the winery in pneumatic presses. Settling, cold storing for 48h. Fermentation in stainless steel vats thermoregulated at 16/20C to preserve the aromas. A part of the wine is aged in barrels , the other part stays in stainless steel vats. Ageing in total lies between 8 to 10 months with regular stirring to gain depth and complexity.

Tasting Notes: This is very solid Chardonnay at this price. . This velvety, polished Burgundy has subtle cream, lemon and pear nuances with a nice, round mouth-feel. The finish has a seductive honey accent that is juicy, bright, and mouth-watering, with a just touch of oak. A brilliant value from Burgundy.

DOMAINE ALAIN CHAVY

Bourgogne Blanc 2022

Burgundy, FR

$40 btl/retail

Having just tasted and toured the domaine with Alain Chavy and his son, this small estate produces restrained, structured, and long-lived white Burgundies from 17 acres of vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet. Alain also has small holdings in the neighboring villages of Chassagne and Meursault. Alain established Domaine Alain Chavy in 2003 with vineyards inherited from his father and includes some of Puligny's top premier crus. Ask us for picks from our last Burgundy tour!

Varietal: 100% Chardonnay from young vines grown in Puligny. Alain inoculates for fermentation and believes in keeping bâtonnage to a minimum. He uses a combination of 400-liter oak puncheons and up to 10% new Burgundian pièce for the Bourgogne Blanc.

Tasting Notes: Wines from Puligny-Montrachet are typified by aromas and flavors of green apple and lemon and tend to be tauter and firmer on the palate compared to wines from neighboring villages. Aging in a small percentage of new French oak barrels lends accents of toast and vanilla.

DOMAINE GABRIEL & PAUL JOUARD

Bourgogne Blanc 2021

Burgundy, FR

$54 btl/retail

I've visited and had dinner with Paul Jouard on a couple occasions and adore his wines. This family-owned winery located in the old village of Chassagne-Montrachet in Burgundy, os known for high-quality white wines made from Chardonnay grapes, which are grown in the famed vineyards of Savigny, Chassagne-Montrachet and even Batard-Montrachet.

Varietal: 100% Chardonnay

Tasting Notes: Fresh and vibrant on the nose, displaying an intense bouquet of citrus fruits, such as lemon and grapefruit, along with delicate floral notes. On the palate, the wine is crisp and refreshing, with a good balance of acidity and fruit flavors. The citrus notes are more pronounced on the palate, with a zesty character, which is complemented by a subtle chalky mineral note that adds complexity to the wine.

The wine has a medium body and a smooth, creamy texture, reminiscent of quality beeswax with a long and satisfying finish that leaves a lingering, fresh feeling.
