PETIT WEEK IN WINE | January 24th - January 28th 2024

TASTING FLIGHT FEATURING:

Umbria

Discover Wines from Italy's "Green Heart" Region

Bordering with Tuscany and north of Rome is the less-traveled region of Umbria. It’s here where you’ll find some of the most amazing, delightfully under-the-radar Italian wines – from the crisp, dry white wines of Grechetto to the deep colored, antioxidant-rich reds of Sagrantino.

Join us this week as we venture to Umbria, Italy for our Tasting Flight.

These are the wines that you fell in love with while you were traveling in Italy, and rarely see back home... well, this week I invite you to discover these THREE fantasic wines from the comfort of your hometown of Charlotte!

Our $20 Tasting Flight kicks off with Grechetto, the signature white grape of Umbria, offering an equally delightful and versatile Italian white. Next in line is a more refined Sangiovese in the form of Montefalco Rosso, followed by a DOCG Sagrantino, renowned for its dark-fruit profile, firm tannins, and notes of spice and herbs.

Prepare to delve into the wines of Umbria this week at Petit Philippe. Our mission is to be stewards for your Wine Journey, and this focused regional tasting flight perfectly embodies that commitment.

Umbria has the unique distinction of being the only Italian wine region without a coastline or international neighbor. However, its landscape and climate are very similar to that of Tuscany: gently rolling hills covered in vines, olive groves, and cypress trees.

Historically, Umbria was overshadowed by the untouchable glamor of Tuscany, a region adored by tourists and oenophiles alike. Yet buyers and consumers are now discovering this beautiful and lesser-known region bordered by Marche to the east and Lazio to the southwest.

Much like the rest of central Italy, Umbria experiences mild winters and hot summers, rising to over 95°F in some places. As a result, only the higher-elevation terroirs are suitable for white wine production in the zone, particularly the hillsides that flank Lake Trasimeno, the largest body of water on the Italian Peninsula. And, like Tuscany, diurnal temperature variation (a significant difference between day and nighttime temperature) can make or break a vintage. If the nights are cool, growers can harvest ripe berries packed full of essential acidity; lower altitude terrains yield overripe grapes and flabby wines.

Grechetto

Grechetto is a dry white wine with a medium to light body. Grechetto wines are expressive of chamomile, white flowers, smoke, mint and fennel and have juicy lemon, green apple and stone fruit flavors.

Sangiovese

Sangiovese produces wines with more savory and earthy flavours than most other reds. On the nose, you'll experience notable aromas of cherry and fig, followed by a flavour profile of sour cherry, cranberry and red plum. Subtle secondary notes of roasted pepper and tomato are more evident in Sangiovese from Umbria than Tuscany.

Sagrantino

Sagrantino is a red grape from Umbria, Italy, primarily cultivated in Montefalco. Its origin is unclear, possibly linked to religious or food festivals. Initially used for sweet wines, it shifted to dry styles in the 1970s. Known for high tannin levels, it produces dark, long-lasting wines with black fruit and spicy notes, epitomized by the renowned Sagrantino di Montefalco.

This land of lush rolling hills, ancient medieval villages, delectable wines, and sumptuous regional cuisine bears more than a passing resemblance to its larger neighbor. Yet this captivating region is no Tuscany; Umbria offers a distinct winemaking culture with a mosaic of unique terroirs, winemaking traditions, and grape varieties.

Plani Arche

Grechetto 2021

Umbria, Italy

$25 btl/retail

Winemaker Roberto Di Filipo has been commited to organic farming at his vineyards since the inception of Plani Arche in the 80s. Hence why their wine label highlights a noble horse, much like the ones used to plow the vineyards since day one.

Varietal: 100% Grechetto from vineyards located across the valley of the ancient city of Assisi. Soils composed of clay & limestone. Aged for 6 months in 1000 liter stainless steel tanks and another 2 months in bottle before release.

Tasting Notes: Deep straw yellow in the glass with aromas of pear, citrus, and some apple on the nose. Fresh on the palate, with some weight thanks to resting on lees. Balanced finish with brightness and fruit notes.

Cólpetrone

Montefalco Rosso 2018

Umbria, Italy

$25 btl/retail

The Rosso di Montefalco is the next-frontier of delicious Italian reds that highlight a non-Tuscan version of Sangiovese to produce an elegant red wine with beautiful tannin structure.

Varietal: A blend of Sangiovese, Sagrantino, Merlot.

Tasting Notes: Intense ruby red with purple hints in the glass. It has an ample fruit nose of raspberries and hints of spices, vanilla, and roasted sweet peppers. The palate is structured with tannins that complement the wine's roundness.

Arnaldo Caprai 'Collepiano'

Montefalco Sagrantino 2018

Umbria, Italy

$59 btl/retail

The 2018 Montefalco Sagrantino Collepiano shows that special Caprai touch that evokes softness and texture without going overboard. Striking that balance is incredibly difficult with a grape like Sagrantino that comes bursting out of the gate with power and often astringency. This wine is alive and fruity with a 15.5% alcohol content that is woven into its rich mouthfeel.

Varietal: 100% Sagrantino. Aged for 22 months in French Oak barriques with a minimum of 6 months of bottle aging.

Tasting Notes: Aromas of violet, red cherry and baked strawberry. Full-bodied with fine tannins. Lots of well-ripened red and black fruit with really nice, spicy complexity. Dark chocolate and espresso come through. A nicely layered red that showcases the Sagrantino varietal at its best.
