No wine region is more exciting right now than Beaujolais!
The Revolution unleashed by Jules Chauvet and his acolytes has spread far and wide. But no region has produced a more dynamic crop of young natural producers than Beaujolais. That said, Beaujolais’ thrills don’t end with natural wine. The region is on the forefront of many of the most exciting trends in wine.
Why has Beaujolais become such fertile ground for fascinating producers and delicious wines?
Partly, because Lapierre and the gang provided a model of successful experimentation: they pushed back on old ways, took risks, and made amazing wines that found a worldwide audience. Of course, it helps to have good role models.
It’s also the diversity of terroir, which doesn’t just permit different expressions of Gamay (and Chardonnay!), but also requires different methods and approaches across the region. How could farming techniques that work 500 meters above sea level on crumbling, stony soils work just as well on rich, flat soils? They don’t. The only way to be sure you’re making the best wine on each site is to keep fine tuning, experimenting. And this diversity is something we will see more and more not just in the red wines, but in the whites and rosé too.
Chénas is located between Julienas and Moulin-A-Vent, and like its neighbors, it produces sturdy and age-worthy wines. Unfortunately, they’re the rarest, and tracking down Chénas in the States can be a tall task. If you’re up for the challenge, though, these smooth and structured reds are worth it.
Moulin-à-Vent is responsible for dense, earthy, powerfully structured Beaujolais. Dark and complex, Moulin-à-Vent can often age for 20+ years in bottle!
Morgon produces some of the most rich and robust wines in Beaujolais. The area’s granite-rich soils yield particularly grippy, concentrated reds. Morgon is synonymous with names like Foillard and Lapierre - the greatest in the appellation.

Varietal: 100% Gamay

Moulin-À-Vent, Beaujolais, FR
$30 btl/retail

Yohan Lardy is a fifth generation winemaker in Beaujolais, but 2012 was the first vintage under his own label, with 2 hectares of 70-100 year old vines on the heights of the Moulin-à-Vent appellation in the prestigious plot "Les Michelons".
Varietal: 100% Gamay; whole cluster fermented with native yeasts and aged in Burgundy barrels for 8-10 months
Taste: A true terroir-driven wine. Yohan's expertise shines through showcasing mixed aromas of tobacco, peppermint, smoke, and traces of meaty and vegetal notes. A juicy and concentrated palate is perfectly balanced by the mouthwatering acidity.

Domaine Mee Godard
Morgon 'Corcelette' 2021
Morgon, Beaujolais, FR
$49 btl/retail
| |
Mee Godard is a perfectionist vigneronne with a philosophy to produce wines that are both elegant & alive. With broad experience at Maison Chanson, Domaine des Comtes Lafon and Chateau de Corton-Andre her wines have been described as possesing "soul". The 2021 Corcelette is an irresistible bottling thanks a mostly whole-cluster approach and a patient élévage in neutral wood.
Varietal: 100% Gamay from the Corcelette vineyard (avg. 70 years old) on south-east-facing granite slopes from two vineyards, Bellevue and Montillet.
Taste: A subtle and complex Morgon that's sleek, concentrated and pristine with a perfume of red forest berries that is laced with touches of spice and freshly tilled earth. Medium to full-bodied, bright and succulent on the palate with a fleshy core of fruit. Long, focused finish with stony minerality that give it a wonderful tension and an austere elegance.
