The Peekskill Basics
What ARE the
Peekskill Basics
?
Based on the Boston Basics, a public/private program that grew out of work at Harvard University, the Peekskill Basics is a campaign inspired by the fact that 80% of brain development happens in the first three years of life.
The Boston Basics are five evidence-based parenting and care-giving principles that encompass much of what experts find is important for children from birth to age three. Ev
ery child from every background can benefit from routinely experiencing Boston Basics learning experiences. Therefore, the Peekskill Basics Initiative is working through a broad range of institutions to ensure that every parent and caregiver is fully supported by family and friends to use the five Boston Basics practices in everyday life.

This year's Young Docents event will take place on Wednesday, May 10 from 6-8 p.m. at the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art (HVCCA). The Young Docents is a program that began last school year with Mrs. Heather Brown's Advanced Art 2 class at Peekskill High School in collaboration with HVCCA. Throughout the school year, students have been exposed to the process of being a docent. This event is a culmination of a year's worth of research, planning and learning about the art pieces at the museum. Please come out and support our student docents as they provide tours of the museum and discuss works of art during this time.

Peekskill Middle School recently hosted its 4th Annual Men's Night celebrations, inviting male roll models of every relation to accompany their students to PKMS for a night of fun and games.
Over 100 students and adults came out to enjoy themselves and share in some bonding time together.
At the event, attendees participated in several activities, workshops and dinner. The evening's special guest, Antwoin "Chef Fresh" Gutierrez from Fresh Taste Bakery, spent the evening speaking with students about the importance of working hard and how having a role model can help a person reach their goals in life.
"Men's Night provides our students with an opportunity to bond with important male figures in their life," said Andrew Kane, a PKMS teacher who helps to organize the annual event. "Each year we look for ways to expand the event and expose our youth to new experiences. I would like to thank all of the participants as well as our supporters for making our fourth annual Men's Night a success."

Lance Johnson is a respected and accomplished multimedia artist whose paintings, influenced by jazz, hip-hop, and Romare Bearden, have been exhibited at many galleries in New York City and around the country. He recently spent a week on his hands and knees in the cafeteria of Peekskill High School's Summit Academy, working with students to create a mural on canvas that reflects their dreams and aspirations.
Johnson's visit was made possible by the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art (HVCCA) and their artist-in-residence program, which arranged for Johnson to work with Summit Academy students. With the support of HVCCA Director of Education Sarah Bachelier, the project began with student voices. English teacher Bridget Connor helped the students craft phrases and quotes reflecting their feelings about school, family, and community. Next, the mural began to take shape on the floor of the Summit cafeteria, which also doubles as the Academy's art space. Summit art teacher Taylor Coleman assisted Johnson and documented the creative process with photographs. Each day, a new layer of paint and words was applied using a wide variety of techniques and tools, from spray paint and stencils to acrylics and brushes. The final product is multi-layered and multidimensional and includes contributions from every student.
"Everyone put a piece of their soul on this piece," Johnson said. "It represents the diversity of the community so well."

At Woodside Elementary, Mrs. Cronin's Kindergarten class has been learning about ways to take care of the Earth. Students have been recycling in the classroom and recently spent some time with Mr. DiFabio, one of Woodside's custodians, to learn even more about recycling. Mr. DiFabio explained which containers the school's recycling is sorted into and showed the children the receptacles first hand.

Thank you to Pre-K Director Carmen Vargas and all of the wonderful Uriah Hill parents, teachers, and staff for creating an amazing carnival adventure, which was enjoyed by both young and old! The event hosted fun characters like leprechauns and offered sports such as basketball and bowling. Lollipops, great food, a photobooth, face painting and much more made the day complete. The proceeds from the event will go to support enhancements for the District's Pre-K programs.
