Making South Carolina safer
for biking and walking since 1995.
January 2023 News
Legislative Session begins
S.157 and H.3394, the Hands Free bills, remain in their committees, with no hearings scheduled yet. Please continue to urge your state legislators to co-sponsor.

The Carolina Squat bill, S.363, advanced successfully through Senate Transportation Committee and received 2nd reading on the Senate floor. Thank Senators Rankin (Horry), Grooms (Charleston), and Verdin (Laurens/Greenville), for their help in moving along this important bill, which would limit the degree cars & trucks can be modified beyond a basic level of safety.

The Trails Tax Credit bill, H.3121, has new co-sponsors, but it could use your help asking your state legislators to add their names. It is currently still in the House Ways & Means committee with no hearing scheduled yet. This bill gives property owners a state income tax credit if they agree to a trail easement.

S.281, the new Public Lands Enhancement Act, has stalled and sits in Senate Finance Committee awaiting a hearing. This bill gives an opening for trail funding. It dedicates the amount derived from sales tax revenue from sporting goods stores to be credited to the Public Lands Enhancement Fund, for capital improvement projects that create, improve, or restore access to public lands and waters, facilities, natural resources including fish and wildlife populations, or recreational opportunities, for use by agencies. If your Senator is a current sponsors / co-sponsors, you might want to thank them (Campsen, Davis, Senn and McElveen).

PCC Board member Fiona Martin will serve as the South Carolina State Coordinator at the 2023 National Bike Summit taking place in Washington, DC March 26-29, 2023.

"There are virtual and in-person options. I'm choosing to go in-person so I can focus on the Bike Summit, network with other bike/ped advocates from around the country, and hopefully have some good discussions with elected officials/aides on Lobby Day.

Who would like to come with me? I would love for us to have a strong delegation from South Carolina representing the Upstate, Midlands, and Coastal regions."

Let us connect you with Fiona if you're interested in this opportunity, whether virtual or in-person. Registration info available here
