As those residents who are “year-rounders” have observed, work on the water main replacement has resumed. Accordingly, Alan Welch and I thought an interim update would be in order.
- The new water main pipes are connected to the existing water main lines on Ocean Drive and Atlantic Ave; however, they are still isolated by shut-off valves.
- The new lines have been filled with water using a connection from a fire hydrant.
- The new lines are being flushed with chlorine to sanitize them. You may have noticed small PVC pipes jutting above the ground at various stormwater catch basins. These have been connected to the new lines by using the stub-outs in the middle of each east/west street that will someday be used to replace the lines that currently run behind houses on each road. Heavily chlorinated water is flowing through these stub-out into the catch basin. There are 19 such connections.
- This flushing process will continue for several days. Then all the catch basin lines will be closed, and chlorine will sit in the new main for 3 to 5 days until the Health Department declares the pipe sanitized and suitable to transport drinking water.
- After obtaining the Health Department's approval, the contractor will begin the process of connecting the new waterline to the existing service line that runs behind the houses on each street. Each connection point will require a ten-foot square section of asphalt to be cut out. Traffic on Lake Drive and then Inlet Way will be closed during this period. Bamboo Lane will be open as soon as the process is south of that street.
-
At this point, when your line is being connected, there will be a short water service disruption and short periods of boiling water requirements. You all will be informed in detail about this when your service line is connected to the new main. For those who are not in Town, it probably is wise to flush your waterlines when you return and boil your drinking water for a day.
Very shortly after the water main work is completed, Lake Drive and Inlet Way will be repaved. Depending on available funds, Edwards Lane and Cascade Lane will also be paved.
