Remembrance of David Whyte
|
On Saturday, March 5th at 2:00pm at Christ Church in Manlius. There will be a Celebration of Life for David Whyte. As David played a big role in the church this will be a traditional service but rather than being sad the hope is to celebrate all that David meant to so many people. Four voices will talk during the service from the four area of David’s life, family, work, scouts and church.
Also as part of the service bulletin there will be a book of remembrances, so if you have a memory, funny story, or recollection you’d like to share you can email it directly to the church at church.office@christchurchmanlius.org using the subject line Celebration of Life David Whyte.

My name is Mike Cargill, I am a father of three daughters (all involved in the scouting program). I am involved in many different levels of scouting so I understand the need for Wood Badge and am one of its greatest promoters. You may ask why I need this and what good will it do? In order to explore that we need to first explore my path up to and beyond Wood Badge.
I took the course, N3-397-19, in 2019 at Seneca Waterways Council, the summer before Covid changed the world we live in. I attended Wood Badge with a close friend of mine (we both started Troop 150, the first female Troop in CNY in the new Scouts BSA Program. I was excited to go and get a new experience (I am an Eagle Scout class of 1998, was always active as a youth and through college). After the course was completed I could not get enough. If you have heard anyone say you need to attend, they mean it. Wood Badge changed the perspective I look at things. It changed so many ideas and methods of doing things that I truly have improved my skill set.
All of us have learned different life lessons, some of us may even have specialized training with youth programs, communications, coaching, etc. Wood Badge gives everyone the opportunity to learn something and to expand upon the knowledge base that each of us already have. Wood Badge is not only leadership training for the BSA program, it's lessons have an impact on the individual. You will come back after the course changed with new knowledge that will help you with every facet of your life from your family to work and definitely within the scouting program.
It truly is not all about the critters (Buffalo Patrol for the win), that's just some of the fun. It's about becoming a better individual, which helps the unit become stronger. My favorite saying when anyone asks why I do something or why I am involved in every little thing I do within the BSA, "We owe it to the Scouts" We can become the best that we can and do everything to make sure that the experience that the Scouts have in the program is the best thing ever. It is our responsibility to help train and give the experience to the leaders of tomorrow.
That is my Wood Badge story, I may be a Buffalo but I am looking forward to being your Troop Guide in the course this spring.

Citizenship in Society
The new merit badge encourages Scouts to explore important topics around diversity, equity, inclusion and ethical leadership and learn why these qualities are important in society and in Scouting. Beginning July 1, 2022, the Citizenship in Society merit badge will be required for any youth seeking to achieve the prestigious Eagle Scout rank.
Application for merit badge counselors are being accepted now, but this isn't your run of the mill process. Counselors will be put through a rigorous review process and once accepted will be required to attend a special training. Please contact the Service Center for more info.
