Welcome to the Override Your Health
Wellness Challenge!
In this, our first(!) newsletter, you will learn more about why we choose each of the 6 Daily Challenges and meet our experts.
The Challenge begins this Saturday (read more about our kick-off Wellness Fair below) and will run for 6-weeks since it takes 6-weeks to create a habit. You earn one point for every challenge you successfully complete each day - with opportunities for bonus points along the way.
The Challenge is self-monitored and there are no penalties if you have a bad day (or two) because we know change is hard and life gets in the way. Each day is a fresh start to be successful. Do your best and work towards turning these challenges into habits you can continue for a lifetime.
Each week, you will receive two e-newsletters with strategies for success, videos of our strength exercises of the week and take a deeper dive into related "biohacking" topics like popular diets & intermittent fasting, supplements, recovery boosts, aerobic exercise zones, sleep tracking and more.
You are also invited to join our private Facebook group to ask your questions, share your successes, get motivated and learn even more.

Drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water
Water is vital to our health. It carries nutrients, flushes bacteria, aids digestion, cushions joints & organs & maintains our body temperature. Poor hydration causes fatigue, low energy and impairs balance (which makes it extra important for the elderly).
Don't forget the electrolytes since too much plain water can be bad too. We're all big fans of LMNT electrolytes & will have samples at the Wellness Fair for you to try.

Fix One Meal
Whole 30, Vegan, Zone, Intermittent Fasting...what diet is best? We'll talk through many of these during the Challenge, but one simple trick is to start with "fixing" one meal to make it healthier.
We'll give you ideas for healthy swaps and simple food prep tips for breakfast, lunch, dinner & snacks. Visit the Food First MD booth at the Fair to get Dr. Christine's Conscience Carbs guide.

Go for a 10min Walk After One Meal
Dr. Attia calls exercise the "most potent longevity drug". While we will be encouraging you to exercise 30+min, 3/days per week, there are also tremendous health benefits when you take a short walk after eating.
A 10-minute walk aids with digestion, burns calories, lowers blood sugar & blood pressure, puts you in a great mood and lowers your Cortisol (stress hormone) which can help you sleep better too. Walking is magic!

|
Do the Strength/Core Exercise of the Day
Losing strength as we age is inevitable, but we can slow that decline by becoming as strong as possible right now. Strength training increases our metabolism so we burn more calories, but it also improves our ability to do daily activities and remain independent as long as possible.
Coach Eric has made a great 6-week Strength Exercise Program that can be done at home in less than 10min - and he'll be at the Fair to test your anaerobic capacity, grip strength and general fitness!

|
Get 7-8 Hours of Sleep (if your sleep is less than 6hrs/night, aim for an extra 30min)
When we sleep, our bodies heal and rejuvenate. It boosts our memory, regulates our metabolism and reduces mental fatigue - while lack of sleep increases your risk for obesity, heart disease & infections, negatively effects brain function and can make you grumpy!
This may be the toughest challenge because many of us need to make big changes to our nightly routine if we want to prioritize sleep. Turn off the TV. Stop mindless scrolling. Savor your sleep and be ready to take on the next day!
| | |
|
Read 10min of Non-Fiction, Journal, Meditate or do Breathwork
Great physical health can't outrun bad mental health. Spend at least 10min every day do something to improve your mind and decrease your stress.
We highly recommend Dr. Peter Attia's book, Outlive, since that's what inspired this challenge. It's a quick and fascinating read and might just give you the added inspiration to Override Your Health!

Eric April - Override Athletics
My name is Eric April, and I’m the Owner of CrossFit Override & Override North (our newest gym in Avon, CT). My passion is in helping people achieve their fitness goals.
I discovered lifting weights when I was 14 years old and it changed my life. Ever since that day I knew I wanted to help people discover a better, healthier version of themselves. I went on to graduate from the UConn School of Business and shortly after partnered with two friends to open a CrossFit gym so we could coach and motivate people to reach their goals.
In my 10+ years’ experience coaching, I have seen hundreds of people completely transform their life by walking into our gym doors. A common occurrence is weight loss, building muscle, gaining strength, improving flexibility, better cardio, balance, mobility, and most importantly, a better mental state.
The impact I’d like to have is to educate and inspire people to take the first step in discovering the best version of themselves because I envision a world full of happiness, strength, and health.

Erin Prather - Fleet Feet Hartford
If you’ve spent much time at Fleet Feet Hartford on a Wednesday evening or Saturday morning, you’ve probably seen me bouncing around getting people excited to go for a run or walk. I helm the training programs and one of my biggest joys in life is helping people find ways to get moving in whatever way works for their bodies and goals.
I have always looked for ways to give back to their community. Whether it’s cheering folks on at local races, leading free zoom workouts, or helping people find the best shoes to carry them across the finish line of whatever their big scary goal might be, people are my happy place! I am always planning fun events at Fleet Feet to be able to expand this incredible movement community.
I can tell you more than you ever thought you needed to know about how having the right shoes and gear can take your fitness to a whole new level, and I’m excited to be a part of this challenge and give you the support and encouragement you need to really override your health!!

Stephanie Blozy - Moderator
And I’m Steph, former owner of Fleet Feet Hartford and moderator of the Override Your Health Wellness Challenge.
Even before I finished reading Outlive by Dr. Peter Attia this spring, I knew I had the answer to the question “What’s Next” after Fleet Feet in the same way I knew that I wanted to share the power of running to change lives after I finished my first marathon in 2002 – seven years after I had been diagnosed with Lupus and told that I shouldn’t tax my body running because “rest was best”.
Turns out that exercise is one of the best prescriptions for health. It gave me back my life – and inspired me to change careers. So, after 15 years as a meteorologist, most notably as “Stephanie of WeatherBug” where I chased tornadoes, reported live from the eye of hurricanes and worked with television meteorologists across the country, I retired my crystal ball to pursue a master’s degree in exercise science from the George Washington University.
Fifteen days after graduating at the top of my class, I moved to Connecticut and became the new owner of Fleet Feet Hartford - a dream come true…for 15 years! Then the itch came to do something bigger.
Through my work and connections at Fleet Feet, I began to realize that running, while powerful, wasn’t enough to keep people healthy as they aged. We need to hydrate more, eat better, add strength and mobility, get quality sleep and take care of our mental health too if we want to live better longer. All strategies in Dr. Attia’s book – and our challenge!
I reached out to my friends above and asked if they wanted to join me in leading a free wellness challenge for our community. To share our collective knowledge and experiences to not just inspire, but show people how a few habits can jumpstart their health no matter how old you are.
I am grateful that they all said YES! I’m excited for you to learn from and be inspired by them. Little tweaks can lead to big changes. Let’s get healthy together!
