Call Me MiSTER — April 19

The Call Me MiSTER Program at MSU Denver is excited to host the inaugural A.F.R.O. Leadership Summit (Aiming for Racial Opportunity) on Friday, April 19, 2024. This event is tailored for male students in grades 6-12. Our summit aims to address the challenges young males, especially African American boys, face in public education. Notably, many of these students go through their entire K-12 education without having African American male teachers.

This year, we are proud to present the theme “Leveling Up: Dream Big. Think Big. Do Big!”

HOW SICK IS TOO SICK?

This week, I want to address a crucial question: "How Sick is Too Sick?" It's essential to understand when it's best to keep your child at home to prevent the spread of illness and ensure their well-being and the well-being of our school community. Per CDPHE guidelines, there are four main reasons for children and adults to stay home:

1. Your student could infect others with a contagious illness, either because of symptoms, a diagnosis, or recent exposure to a contagious illness.
2. Your student does not feel well enough to take part in usual activities. For example, a child is overly tired, fussy, or will not stop crying.
3. Your student needs more care than teachers and staff can give while still caring for the other children.
4. Your student has symptoms or an illness on this list, and staying home is required.

Flu and COVID Prevention

One of the most effective ways to protect your child and our school community from the flu is by getting a flu shot. We strongly recommend contacting your healthcare provider to inquire if the flu shot is available and recommended for your child. Additionally, staying up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations and following public health guidelines, such as mask-wearing and social distancing, can help reduce the risk of transmission of both the flu and COVID-19.

North Entrance

The Jewell Avenue (north) entrance to the Overland-Prairie campus and the STRIDE Health Clinic will be closed during school hours. Vehicles may enter from Pacific Drive.

The STRIDE Health Clinic parking lot is for patients only.

Security Kiosk

A security hut has been placed at the Pacific Avenue entrance to our campus near the four-way stop. This is a security checkpoint and a drop-off location for food deliveries.

Community Liaison

Meet Sara Khatib, our Community Liaison. She can help students and families with various needs such as

• Economic hardship/homelessness
• Uninsured or medical difficulties
• Free and reduced lunch

From national parks to world-class museums, Colorado offers complimentary admission on regular dates throughout the season, every year. Get free entry on a select day(s) at the Denver Zoo, Botanic Gardens, Art Museum, Museum of Nature & Science, State Parks, and Colorado’s four National Parks.

There are a lot of free things you can do in a state like Colorado. You can camp under the brightest stars or hike up the highest peak, without ever dropping a dime. And if you remember these dates, you can save some money on seeing these normally paid attractions.

Weather Delays and Snow Days

Winter weather can happen at any time. Ensure that you receive weather delay and closure notifications by making sure your phone numbers and email addresses are correct in myCherryCreek.

Just log in to myCherryCreek, click on the Oracle tile, then on Contact Info in the menu on the left. Make sure your Home Mobile Phone and/or Home Phone numbers and Work Email address are correct, so that you will receive weather delay and closure notifications.

Check Your Student's Grades and Attendance

Just a reminder that CCSD allows parents/guardians to access their student's grades, attendance, email teachers, and access student classwork via myCherryCreek. This is a great way to help you monitor your student's academic success at Overland throughout the academic year.

Food Deliveries

For safety reasons, food deliveries will not be accepted inside the building. Students should limit all deliveries to their lunch time, and food must be picked up outside near the security kiosk.

Please Apply for Free & Reduced Lunch

Even though Colorado has elected to provide free meals for all students, applying for MEAL BENEFITS through the district has benefits beyond meals. For example: 

• Reduced cost for testing
• Reduced Athletic and Activities Fees
• Reduced or free College Application Fees

You need to reapply every school year.
