NEWSLETTER: March 2024

SHELTER. SERVICES. SUPPORT. 24/7.

Although the Tulsa Day Center did start out simply as a daytime shelter for those experiencing homelessness, today we are so much more.

In preparing our 2023 Annual Report, I'm always so proud of the breadth of the work our team does to help people get to a better, more stable place...day and night.

Here are a few teasers from our soon-to-be released report. In 2023, with the help of the Tulsa Day Center:

  • 601 people avoided homelessness by receiving services to keep them in their current home when unexpected circumstances arose.
  • 300 people were housed after being unsheltered for a wide variety of reasons.
  • 580 people visited the medical clinic 6,966 times, averting 421 ER visits and saving over $1 million.

Thank you to each and every one of you who makes the work of our tireless team possible through volunteerism, donations, clothing drives and advocacy.

FACES OF HOPE

WAY TO GO, ROCKY!

Rocky now has a place to call home after living on the streets and in shelters for the last year and a half. The Day Center worked with Rocky to address some of his medical concerns through our clinic, and his case manager was able to connect him with housing through one of our partners. Rocky knows that having a roof over his head will make his medical needs so much easier to deal with, and we are honored to have been a part of his journey.

TRAINING WITH DR. XAIVER AMADOR

Dr. Xavier Amador visited Tulsa starting with a dinner to discuss the condition of anosognosia and how we can approach people with empathy and compassion.

The following day, more than 300 people, mostly mental health practitioners, took part in his LEAP training to learn how to put best practices to work when interacting with someone who can't see that they may have a mental illness and need help.

If you missed the trainings, check out Dr. Amadors's book, I am Not Sick, I Don't Need Help.

SCHEDULE A TOUR

If you've ever wondered what the work of the Day Center looks like up close, we would love to show you! In our experience, once people come through the doors, they "get it." Set up a time for Development Director Monica Martin to tell you the Day Center's story and introduce you to some of our very special clients.
