Very Special Screening of "Papers" with Q&A with the Lesbian Filmmakers and Jorge, the Gay Student in the Film!
Sunday, February 20th at 2:30pm |
|---|
Join the Movement!
VOICE (Voices of Immigrant Children for Education and Equality) and Out Boulder (www.outboulder.org) cordially invite you to a FREE screening of Papers (www.papersthemovie.com) with Special Guests: Director and Producer Anne Galisky and Rebecca Shine, as well as Jorge from the film!
On Sunday, February 20: 2:30 pm Film Screening, 4:15 Reception and Q&A CU-Boulder, Humanities 150
Jorge Gutierrez arrived to the United States at the age of 10 with his mother and four siblings. He is now 26, and after 16 years his educational and career DREAMS are still on hold. Jorge is Queer; Undocumented; Unafraid. These identities represent daily struggles in his life not only as an undocumented student fighting to attain documentation but also a Queer Latino fighting homophobia in his own community. Jorge is unafraid and empowered to be the voice of the Queer DREAMERS advocating for the rights of Queer and undocumented youth.

He is passionate and committed to bridge the immigrant rights movement and the LGBTQ movement in order for both movements to begin working and moving forward together. For him, both struggles are not paralleled but rather intersected and he is sight of such complex intersection. Jorge holds a Bachelor's in English from the California State University system. He wants to continue in his educational journey and obtain a Master's in Education and eventually obtain a PhD and become a professor.
Anne Galisky, the "Papers" Director is a co-founder of Graham Street Productions, which produces documentary films. Before becoming a filmmakers, Anne founded and operated Small World Builders, a building construction company, for fifteen years. She earned a Masters in History, with her research on the Japanese Internment included in the Internment Memorial at the Expo Center in Portland, Oregon.
Rebecca Shine, who along with El Grupo Juvenil, the "Papers" Youth Crew, produced "Papers," is a co-founder of Graham Street Productions. Her passion for literature and the art of story-telling drew her to documentary film production. Before producing "Papers," Rebecca provided consulting services to non-profits, schools and public agencies, focused on the areas of economic development, social services and youth leadership. She has mentored many young people, including a number of undocumented youth. Her passion for social and economic justice, matched by her love of story-telling inspired her to bring the stories of immigrant youth to light.
About the film: Every year approximately 65,000 youth graduate from high school in this country without "papers," or legal status. Until we change the immigration laws, the majority have no means to fix this problem. "Papers" introduces us to five of these young people.
Following the screening, Anne Galisky, Rebecca Shine, and Jorge from the film there will be a free reception, and we will hold a Q&A about the intersection of LGBT and Immigrants' Rights movements

Transyouth Education and Support (TYES)
|
|---|
TYES is a support organization for families with gender variant children, is now meeting in the Boulder area. Meetings are held at 6 p.m. on the fourth Friday of every month, as well as occasional social gatherings. For more information please email TYES.group@gmail.com.
It was clear from a very early age that my child was different from her male cousins. Born in a boy's body, she loved playing with girl toys and taking on female roles. As she grew older her level of anxiety grew and it became more obvious how different she felt from her classmates. I began to seek out other children for her to socialize with who understood her need for cross-gender play. From that pursuit, TYES was born. Over the past 3 years of our groups existence, I have watched my child and several others flourish. It made an enormous difference when they realized they were not alone in the world and that there was a community of people that loved and understood them.
TYES has been meeting for over 3 years in the Denver area and an associated group is now forming near Boulder. The intent of the group is to support family members as well as the children themselves. Our children currently range in age from 8 to 18, and we encourage families with even younger kids to participate. We often have parents who attend our group without their children in order to learn from others in similar situations. The group is only open to parents and siblings of gender variant children. |

Girlyman and Ellis - Live Music in Lyons! |
|---|
Planet Bluegrass presents amazing live music in the beautiful Wildflower Pavilion in Lyons, CO! Out Boulder will have an information table in the lobby before the concerts - be sure to drop by and say, "Hi!" For more information on the shows and to buy tickets...
Friday, March 11, 2011, 8pm show, 7pm doors
As one of the biggest breakout surprises of last summer's Folks Festival (earning a main stage encore and a raucous capacity crowd for their Wildflower workshop), we couldn't wait to welcome back the musically playful quartet to Planet Bluegrass... Onstage they often finish one another's sentences or burst into improvised three-part ditties so tight they seem rehearsed. In trush, the Atlanta-based quartet has had years to develop this rapport, as founding members Doris Muramatsu and Tylan Greenstein became best friends in second grade. After meeting Nate Borofsky in college at a talent show, they've been creating their own unique language of three-part harmony.
Informed by 60s vocal groups like Simon & Garfunkel and The Mamas and the Papas, and infused with years of classical and jazz training, Girlyman's songs are a dance of melody and suspensions - an irresistible blend of acoustic, Americana, and rock The Village Voice calls "really good, really unexpected, and really different." Most recently, Girlyman has been collaborating with comedian Margaret Cho, who describes the band: "They seamlessly blend folk, country, pop, and rock, and they genre bend as fearlessly and flawlessly as they gender-bend. It's the music of my heart and soul. Girlyman is the future and the past and the present."
EllisFolk singer, dharma teacher, comedienne...
Friday, April 15, 2011, 8pm show, 7pm doors
Ellis may not be a household name, but once you've seen her perform you're not likely to forget her. A mix of folk artist, dharma teacher, and comedienne, her music is best described by the effect it has on her audience rather than a particular genre. Simply put, she leaves audiences better than she finds them, with softened edges & opened hearts. With compelling songwriting and engaging performances, Ellis is quietly amassing a loyal following of supporters across the country.
A native of Texas, Ellis moved to Minneapolis at the age of 16, where she quickly built a local following that blossomed into a nationwide presence, with extensive touring and seven albums released in the last sixteen years. In addition to selling more than 35,000 copies of her CDs independently, Ellis has accrued a wealth of accomplishments including national songwriting honors and performances at the Philadelphia Folk Festival, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, Sisters Folk Festival and the Rocky Mountain Folk Festival (where her annual performance in the Wildflower is one of the festival's highlights).
