Update from the Mayor 2

As I am certain you know, after two years of discussion, testing and debate, our new automated trash pickup program istarts the week of May 2.

Starting next week, the week of April 19th, we will begin giving our one free large wheeled trash barrel per household.  (If you live in a multi--family, you get one per unit.)  The new large wheeled trash barrels are sometimes called toters or wheeled carts.

Please do not use the new toters until the week of May 2. We cannot pick them up until the week of May 2nd, since the trash company will be using the old trucks until then.

This newsletter answers many of the common questions about our new automated trash pickup program. I also have links you can check for more information and telephone numbers to call.

We have tested this program for nearly two years.  Our pilot program was overwhelmingly popular.  I  am confident that most people will find it to be an upgrade to their current service.  Let me know after you try it.

Meanwhile, if I can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me at any time.

Your Mayor,

Jim Fiorentini

An Outline of our New Trash Program

The new automated trash pickup system will provide you with better service and will save your tax dollars.  Here is how it works:

Every household unit gets one free 64 gallon wheeled container, about the equivalent of two of the barrels you currently are allowed to use.  If you live in a multi-family home, each unit gets one toter.

Starting the week of May 2, all your trash must fit into that one large toter.  Our studies have shown that this will work for the overwhelming majority of our citizens .

Recycling continues to be free and unlimited.  We encourage you to use your existing barrels for recycling.  When you get the toter, there will be some recycling stickers in it.  You can get more stickers at the highway yard .

On trash pickup day, here is what your area should look like:

The existing barrels are repurposed for recycling.  The new toter is facing the street with the metal arm facing the street area.
Common Questions and answers

Here are some of the most common questions we get in the Mayor's office about the new program:

1.  I am a senior citizen; Can I handle the new toter?

We tested this for two years and had many people in the pilot program over 70, and some over 80. Most people find it easier than their current system.  The answer is simple physics:  barrels on large wheels are easier to use than barrels you have to lift.

If you prefer a smaller toter, 32 gallons, we have them available, but we strongly encourage you to try the regular 64 gallon one first.

We recognize that there are very small number of elderly and disabled people who just cannot handle any barrels, even if it is on wheels.  We have a hardship exemption for them. Please call the recycling department for more details.

2.  Will this one barrel be enough to handle my trash?

A:  We had families of 6 in the program and they tell us it worked fine.

If you can document that you have a very large family, 6 or more children living with you, then we will provide a second toter for free.

We recognize that there are weeks especially at Christmas times.when no matter how much recycling you do, you cannot make this work.  We are supplying you with a coupon for 5 free additional bags to use around the holiday.

If there are other weeks when this just does not work for you, you can also buy additional bags at the highway department or local supermarkets.

We also have the option of renting a second barrel from us.  The second barrel is $150 for the first year and $100 for every year after that.

We are truly hoping that with vigorous recycling that this program will work and that you will never have to buy a thing.  The extra barrel and bag is there for the exception, not the rule.

Where do I put this new trash barrel?

The trash people will deliver it to your home.  They will try their best to leave it exactly where they want you to leave it when you fill it with trash starting the week of May 2.

Remember-- DO NOT LEAVE it out before the week of May 2.

Generally, wherever you leave your trash today is where you are going to leave your new large wheeled trash container.

What About Narrow Streets?

There are narrow streets in all of the other 60 Massachusetts cities and towns that use this, including Lowell, Lawrence, Revere, Everett and East Boston.  On those really narrow streets, the trash company will use a special rear loading system.  They get your trash on your street today and they will get it with the new system.

What about the snow?

This system works in the snow.  Barrels, whether they are on wheels or not, are more difficult in the snow.  We have videos below of the trucks picking up barrels in the snow and we tested it last year in the snow.  Many of our pilot program users said it was somewhat easier in the snow with the new barrels.
Where to go for more information

We have a lot of information about the new trash collection system on our city website.  We have frequently asked questions, informational guides, a form to request an additional barrel, To check out our website, please click here .

If you still have questions please call our recycling department at  978-420-3817.
New Constituent Services Updates

We are always looking to improve our constituent services.

This month, we break out two updates to our online constituent services.

Our new Online GIS Map, there is a click at the top of the screen, click here .  This new GIS system shows zoning, check your property card with the assessor's office, check the zoning, the ward and precinct, trash collection route and so, so much more.

We also have a new awesome constituent services form on our website and we have a mobile app.

If you need any service from city hall, please check out our new constituent services interface.   Click here.
