letter from the President

the change of seasons is a great time to reassess, reevaluate, and renew

The changing seasons are a constant reminder of the fact that nothing stays the same forever. It’s a great time to reassess, reevaluate, and renew our purpose, priorities, and commitments we make to ourselves and others.

As you are preparing to send kids back to school, packing the summer shorts, tank tops, and bathing suits away, and admiring the crispness of the autumn mornings, it’s also a great time to look at your finances and see where you might want to tweak things to prepare, not just for fall, but the longer term as well.

The good news is that you don’t have to do it alone.

how to navigate money conversations with confidence

Why is it so Hard to Talk About Money?

While it’s one of the most important conversations we can have in life and business, many people find discussing money super uncomfortable and daunting, even in their closest personal relationships.

Think about it though. A conversation about money is pretty cut and dried. The numbers don’t have feelings you can hurt or egos you can bruise. So why is it such an emotional challenge to approach these conversations?

Most of us are ill prepared to think about money dispassionately. What we learned at home and in school never prepared us to take on deliberate and honest conversations about the ways money effects our lives and relationships and ways that we can make it easier for ourselves.

fall to do list

creating your fall financial bucket list

The days are getting shorter, and the nights a bit longer and a lot cooler. You’ve put away the pool toys and resigned yourself to the fact that the time to work in another summer vacation may have passed you by.

Hopefully, you spent summer enjoying every weekend and taking advantage of every opportunity for fun, sun, surf, sand, and whatever else the season might bring. While we can take solace in the fact that summer will, once again, come back around and lay its bounty at our feet, right now it’s time to prep for fall. Here are a few thoughts to consider when organizing your fall financial bucket list.

New season, new priorities

Summertime means spontaneity—lake trips, vacations with the kids (or without), outdoor dining, consuming great novels from a shady beach chair, and more. But a new season means new budget priorities.

Megan with new car

member highlight: going the extra mile!

When her old car gave out, Megan turned to Canopy for help and met Corey at our Spokane Valley branch. Not only did Corey assist her in finding a new car, but he also took the time to educate her on loans and credit scores, turning a frustrating situation into a valuable learning experience.

“I just want to make sure people know how incredibly helpful, patient, and understanding he was,” Megan said. Next, Megan started shopping and was able to find her next set of wheels with Corey’s help. The first thing she did with her new, reliable ride? Take it out for a kayaking adventure!

Social Security Card

9 facts about Social Security

Social Security has been a fact of retirement life ever since it was established in 1935. We all think we know how it works, but how much do you really know? Here are nine things that might surprise you.

  1. The Social Security trust fund is huge. It was $2.8 trillion at the end of 2022.1
  2. Most workers are eligible for Social Security benefits, but not all. For example, until 1984, federal government employees were part of the Civil Service Retirement System and were not covered by Social Security.2
  3. You don't have to work long to be eligible. If you were born in 1929 or later, you need to work for 10 or more years to be eligible for benefits.3
