The fact that two festivals in our region this week started 40 and 50 years ago means they must be doing something right. The Edom Art Festival celebrates its 50th year and the Marshall FireAnt Festival continues for its 40th year. Both festivals are bigger and better than the year they started. Edom Art Festival Celebrates 50 Years

The 50th annual Edom Art Festival features more than 60 juried artists showing their original high-quality work. The outdoor festival occurs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday October 8 and Sunday, October 9, in a large meadow behind the artist studios along the town’s main thoroughfare, Highway 279. READ MORE.

Governor Ann Richards proclaimed October 3, 1991, Stevie Ray Vaughan Day in Texas 31 years ago — the year after he was killed in a helicopter crash.

Vaughan's tragic and unexpected death shocked fans and the music world. His fame spanned only seven years of his lifetime, but his mastery of traditional blues music with the electric guitar brought an unmatched swagger to the genre and defined him as one of rock n’ roll’s greatest musicians. 40th FireAnt Festival Fun For All

Marshall celebrates the 40th Annual FireAnt Festival Saturday, October 8, in its scenic downtown square. The event is hosted by the Greater Marshall Chamber of Commerce and features live music performed by Gilmer native Curtis Grimes and other artists around the steps of the historic Harrison County courthouse. See 'Not.One.More.Word.' At UT Tyler

An exhibit titled Not.One.More.Word. A Solo Exhibition by Lori Solley is on display at the University of Texas at Tyler's Fine Arts Complex Gallery through October 14.

Solley is a Gilmer native who received a bachelor of fine arts from UT Tyler in two-dimensional art and a master of fine arts from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth with an emphasis in printmaking. Her work consists primarily of combinations of drawing, printmaking, and collage techniques. READ MORE.
