CUNY Callouts

David Martinez, known as “Avid” to his friends, is a junior at Baruch College who is majoring in marketing and has a passion for the fashion industry. David has modeled and designed for Baruch’s student-led clothing brand, Homme D’affaire, which was started by members of the CEO club in 2021. Through this work, he acquired skills like working with color and creating clothing from recycled materials. He also worked as an intern for Art Beyond Sight, a nonprofit that connects people with disabilities to arts programming, where he helped produce and strategize social media content.

What challenges have you overcome?

“One was finding an internship that related to my major. CUNY really helped me with that because they have programs that help students who have not had an internship yet, like CUNY Career Launch.”

What else are you working on?

“As a personal project, I’m practicing different methods of fashion styling by playing around with designs and putting different outfits and accessories together.”

What suggestions would you give a current student to do to help their professional growth?

“Communication is a key part of growth. Get comfortable with networking and talking to people because you’ll be able to find a lot of opportunities that way. Attending workshops also helps, because the facilitators want you to succeed and can help you go far.”
