Dear Friends,

As many of you may know by now, the Rt. Rev. Sean Rowe has been elected as the 28th Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church. Bishop Rowe is a visionary leader who is highly skilled in adaptive leadership and possesses tremendous knowledge and history of the Episcopal Church. I am confident he has the skills to lead our Church in this present moment, as one who will continue to build on the mission of love forged by Presiding Bishop Michael Curry.

It was a pleasure to serve on the Joint Nominating Committee for the 28th Presiding Bishop and witness firsthand the gifts of not only our Presiding Bishop-elect but all of the nominees. I am grateful for Nebraska Bishop J. Scott Barker, Central New York Bishop DeDe Duncan-Probe, Pennsylvania Bishop Daniel G.P. Gutiérrez, and Atlanta Bishop Robert Wright for offering themselves for discernment.

In his address to the 81st General Convention on Wednesday, Bishop Rowe said this:

“We know that we cannot continue being The Episcopal Church in the same way, no matter where we live,” he said. “It’s time to reorient our church … to support dioceses and churches on the ground, where ministry happens.”

There is no doubt in my mind that Bishop Rowe is well-equipped for the challenges and opportunities ahead for The Episcopal Church.

Please join me in giving thanks for Bishop Rowe, his wife Carly, and his daughter Lauren as they embark on this new chapter in their lives. In addition to your weekly prayers for me and our current Presiding Bishop, I ask that all congregations add our Presiding Bishop-elect to the prayers of the people.

I'm excited for what is ahead for all of us in The Episcopal Church.

In Christ,

The Rt. Rev. José A. McLoughlin,

Bishop
