Our Medically Tailored Meals Program
Receives
National Press Coverage!
|
An article just published by the Associated Press, and featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, and San Francisco Chronicle, discusses a recent shift in our healthcare system to focus on keeping patients healthy instead of waiting to treat them once they become sick or wind up in the hospital. Realizing that a person's health depends mostly on what happens outside of a doctor's visit, insurers are expanding what they pay for to include services such as rides to fitness centers, checking in with customers to help ward off loneliness, and medically tailored meals from Community Servings.
Currently, healthcare contracts cover about 20% of our
meals program, and with new research showing a 16% net reduction in healthcare costs for those receiving our meals, that number is expected to rise over the next several years.

Healthcare Industry Branches Into Fresh Meals, Rides to Gym" by the

Meet Our New Manager of Nutrition Services!
|
|
|
We're pleased to welcome aboard Valerie Machinist, MS, RDN, LDN, to lead Community Servings' Nutrition Department and talented team of dietitians! As the Manager of Nutrition Services, Valerie collaborates with our chefs to develop and improve upon our medically tailored meals program, provides over-the-phone nutrition counseling and assessments to our clients, builds partnerships to expand nutrition education for our critically ill neighbors and community members, and much more.
"Food provides so much more than calories for people, especially when they are critically and/or chronically ill. The medically tailored meals that Community Servings provides not only gives comfort, but provides appropriate nutrition to support positive health outcomes," says Valerie.

Our new Manager of Nutrition Services,Valerie, recently shared with us her favorite summer recipe for zucchini bread. It's made with wholesome ingredients like zucchini, yogurt, whole-wheat flour, and flax meal.
"My summer CSA share always provides me with more zucchini than I know what to do with! I love making this zucchini bread for my family," says Valerie

What's in a Community Servings meal bag? Every
week we deliver a free bag of meals to each of our critically ill clients, their dependent children, and a caregiver. Bags are packed with five days' worth of
hearty dinners, nourishing soups, fresh salads, fruit, snacks, and desserts -- all tailored to meet the
nutritional needs of our clients fighting illnesses such
as HIV/AIDS, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and others.

Did you know that you can quickly "chop" a large batch of hard-boiled eggs by pressing them through a cooling rack? These volunteers from @cityyearboston made quick work of many dozens of eggs, which were later transformed into a protein-rich, vegetarian egg salad that we delivered to our clients facing critical and chronic illnesses. Try this cooking tip at home!
