Tim's Wine Market
Dinner with importer
Bobby Kacher
and the reason I am in the wine business

Monday, November 2nd, 6:30 to 9 pm
@ The Boardroom of East End Market
$120 per person, all inclusive

I am excited to announce that for the first time in 26 years I will be hosting a dinner with importer Bobby Kacher, with whom I visited France for the first time in 1993.  At that time I was running the wine shop for Dexter's which was a position I took to bide time while actively looking for a job in financial services.  As part of an incentive program Dexter took me to France to travel with Bobby and meet the producers whose wines I was selling.  It was my first time abroad and an experience that changed my life, the details of which are too long to review here but I will share that night or the next time you visit the store.
On this evening, Monday, November 2nd at 6:30 pm, we will dine upstairs in the Boardroom at East End Market  where my friend Chef Jamie McFadden will prepare a four course dinner, paired with seven wines Bobby will present.  For those who do not know, Jamie has participated in several James Beard dinners and is chef/owner of Cuisiners, a top flight catering company.  The menu and wine selection is below and seating is limited to 20 people.  The cost is $120 per person, tax and gratuity is included.   Please call 407-895-9463 for reservations.  A credit card will be required to hold your reservation and we will enforce our 48 hour no cancellation policy.

Meet our new neighbors
Paper Goat Post

We have a new retail neighbor here at Swanson's Ivanhoe Row, Megan and Cedar Watson and their charming new store Paper Goat Post.  I love their store but cannot describe it in a way that does it justice, so I will let them do it for me.
We are twin sisters, Megan & Cedar, out to follow our dream of sharing our love of paper with others. We truly believe there is something to celebrate every day (with a little or a lot of paper). We have always wanted to create a space to cultivate a love for paper. An unexpected card, a simple note, a birthday banner, a party invitation or a perfectly presented parcel - the possibilities are endless and we can help with every detail! We strive to promote togetherness through the lost art of snail mail, gathering in celebration and the thoughtful art of giving. Our goal is to ensure that no matter if you are attending or hosting a celebration it's filled with unique details to make the celebration truely one-of-a-kind. Combining over 20 years experience making other people's dreams a reality we're ready to make yours next. We can't wait to see you at Paper Goat Post.

Stop in and visit them the next time you come to Tim's (or any of the other great stores here at the Row.)  They are located next to Backhaus Bakery in the shallow courtyard.

The Value of Being Close Enough
Wines of Lake and Mendocino Counties
The features for this week come from Mendocino and Lake counties California, the northern neighbors of Napa and Sonoma. Vineyard growth has exploded in these areas during the past two decades and it is not hard to see why. The land values are significantly lower and the growing conditions are not that different.  As a result the wines are often great values as the selections this week show.

Boy does this winery deserve "Come Back Player of the Year."  After years of great promise  then vintage after vintage of mediocre wines, new owner Bill Foley (Meerus, Chalk Hill, Lancaster and of course Foley Vineyards) has injected much needed cash into the winemaking and it shows.  My recent portfolio tasting of the middle tier "Lake County" series was a revelation where I found several impressive wines.
The fruit for this wine comes from the sprawling 21,000 acre Guenoc estate, sixty miles north of San Francisco.  Temperatures in Lake County run a little cooler than Napa, to the south, so the wines tend to run just a bit lower in alcohol.  2013 was a spectacular vintage and so the wines have fantastic balance and texture.  This wine also benefits from being fermented in oak barrels with 30% new French barrels, which is unheard of for a $13 wine.
When you open this wine and pour the first glass it immediately gives you a bouquet that is plump, with notes of fresh pineapple and peach, yellow apple, creme brûlée, coriander and nutmeg.  In the mouth it shows superb texture and length, again, for $13?, and a long, creamy finish. Drink over the next one to two years with or without food.

Originally this brand was created by Cline Cellars and was called Red Truck.  Then it was purchased by Bronco Wines, the empire that also makes Two-Buck Chuck, and they have extended it to become a full line of wines made with organically grown grapes from their vineyards in the far reaches of Mendocino County.
Anyone who has ever driven from Sonoma to Mendocino county knows that as you hit the county line you begin to climb in elevation.  Most of the vineyards in Mendocino County (called Mendo by those in the trade) grow in the high valleys of Sierra Nevada mountains, along with the area's other cash crop, marijuana.  There are many different microclimates in the county to grow a lot of varieties but one thing they are certainly known for is big red wines.
To produce this wine the grapes are farmed using the protocols of the California Certified Organic Farmers, meaning no man made chemicals on the vines.  The grapes are destemmed then fermented in stainless steel with frequent pump-overs to extract color and tannin.  It is interesting to note that one way of taming the savage tannins of Petite Sirah is to actually make the wine more tannic.  The length of the tannin "chains" (too complex to describe here) become so long that you cannot perceive them as easily and the wine actually feels smoother.  One thing I also love about Bronco is their lack of transparency when it comes to blending.  This wine is 76% Petite Sirah, 16% "mixed reds" and 6% Centurion, a rare hybrid developed by Dr. Harold Olmo in 1975.
When you open this wine you will want to give it a good splash in the decanter to allow the bouquet to develop.  Once you do it gives you an inviting combination of black raspberry pie filling and Luxardo cherries, cinnamon stick, cardamom seed and baked pastry crust.  On the palate it gives you a deep sense of forward fruit, then the tannins jump up and provide a little bit of a dusty finish.  Serve this wine with grilled tri-tip steaks or grilled sausages.
