EDUCA DPS Podcast: Welcoming Newcomer Students
In this week's EDUCA DPS Podcast, members of the Multilingual Education (MLE) Department, Allison Ratchford and Sary Portillo, discuss the remarkable impact of their efforts in supporting our newcomer students. Our MLE Department works directly with students, families and educators to ensure that Multilingual Learners (MLLs) receive an equitable, high-quality education.
This year, DPS has welcomed more than 3,000 newly-arrived MLL students, a significant increase from our typical annual average of 500. Not only are resources being provided to our students and families, but the MLE Department also offers instructional support to schools that are welcoming newcomer students.

Men in Nursing Day Expands Horizons for Middle School Boys
On April 30, the Spark Early Career Exploration Program hosted its first-ever "Men in Nursing Day" in collaboration with Children's Hospital Colorado. The event was attended by 80 middle school boys from McAuliffe at Manual Middle School, Montbello Middle School, Florida Pitt Waller and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Early College. Students participated in a variety of nursing workshops, including first aid, hands-only CPR, nursing pathways and essential nursing soft skills. Our goal was to break stereotypes and show our young men that nursing is a career path open to everyone, regardless of gender. The DPS Spark program believes it's crucial to expose our middle schoolers to diverse career options early on, and we hope events like this pave the way for a more diverse future in healthcare.

Vaccine Clinics at Community Hubs
The Far Northeast Community Hub hosted a vaccine clinic last week where more than 150 vaccines were administered. This vaccination event was made possible through a partnership with Julissa Soto, CEO, Health Equity Consultant and Public Health Advocate. We are ensuring all children and families in DPS are vaccinated and healthy by providing the necessary support to offer a safe and welcoming space for families and children to receive immunizations.
We are pleased to announce that our vaccination clinic opportunities will continue throughout the summer. In collaboration with various summer programs, we aim to make vaccines easily accessible for all. Additionally, these efforts will extend into the next school year to ensure ongoing protection and health for our community.
