CELEBRATION OF WORLD MARRIAGE DAY
|
|
A special blessing of all married couples
Feb. 12 and 13
At all St. Thomas More masses
Sacramental dignity, with all the special graces
that adhere to any sacrament,
was conferred on marriage by Christ.
St. Paul calls marriage “a great sacrament” placing it above others.
When Christ wished to give a sign of the union
that exists between Him and His Church,
he chose the sacred union of a married couple.
No higher dignity could be attached to any relationship.
Through the sacrament of matrimony,
husband and wife receive graces which
join them in the bonds of mutual love,
aid them to share affection for one another,
strengthen them to avoid illicit attachments and passions,
fortify them to become worthy parents,
and help them to keep their marriage honorable in all things.
A marriage entered into with such proper dispositions
will be blessed in many ways.

Kicker Evan McPherson sends Cincinnati Bengals to FIRST Super Bowl since 1988
Whether it’s with his postgame attire
which is a black shirt with the words
-God is good-
or sharing Scripture on social media,
McPherson is vocal about sharing his faith publicly.
He frequently posts pictures on Instagram following
or leading up to games or other events
and adds a Bible verse in the caption.
After the Bengals beat the Chiefs he posted,
“To God be the glory,” in the caption,
along with John 3:16, which reads,
“For God so loved the world that he gave
his one and only Son,
that whoever believes in him
shall not perish but have eternal life.”

GOSPEL READING REFLECTION
For FEBRUARY 13, 2022
6th Sunday in Ordinary Time

True Poverty and Riches
"Woe to you who are filled now,
for you will be hungry.
Woe to you who laugh now,
for you will grieve and weep.
Woe to you when all speak well of you,
for their ancestors treated the false
prophets in this way.”
- People had come from all over Israel to hear what Our Lord had to say, but he ‘looked’ at his disciples when he announced the great reversal that would one day occur. If they suffer any evil now because of their allegiance to Him, they will be repaid with great blessings in heaven.
- Then Christ addressed his listeners who had some form of happiness in this life based on doing evil. They too would be repaid, but with corresponding evils in the next life.
- We can look to the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus as an example of this reversal of fortune.
- If we can correctly read the signs of the times, faithful Catholics have a lot to rejoice over, because “people [will] hate you, and . . . exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man.”
- In order to enter the Kingdom of heaven, we must be detached from riches (CCC 2544).
- Riches certainly include money and property, but also pertains to everything we value: for instance, talent, skill, knowledge, appearance, family, and friends.
- “Jesus enjoins his disciples to prefer him to everything and everyone” (CCC 2544).
- We must be willing to set all these good things aside so as not to “be hindered in [our] pursuit of perfect charity” (CCC 2545). Why? The reason is that in this life, charity is acting for the true good, even if it requires sacrifice. If charity is our goal, then the goods of creation are subordinate to charity and are either a means to that end or in opposition to it.
- Detachment from goods helps us understand the beatitude “Blessed are the poor in spirit” (CCC 2546). Those who have renounced all their “goods” now see everything as a gift from God and as belonging to Him, not our own property.

ANSWER TO QUIZ
St. Sebastian
is the patron saint of athletes
and a great warrior of the faith.
Living In Rome under the dangerous rule of Diocletian, he not only dared to be a Christian—he dared to be a Christian right under the Emperor’s nose as a captain in the Emperor’s bodyguard.
He used his position in the Praetorian Guard to minister to the Christians suffering under persecution.
Diocletian eventually learned of Captain Sebastian’s faith,
and ordered him to be shot with arrows.
It is in this condition that we always see him depicted.
But it would take more than a few arrows
to bring down the gritty Sebastian.
He survived and was nursed back to health
by a generous Christian widow.
Then—fearless and unflappable as ever—
he marched straight back to Diocletian
and upbraided him for his cruelty to the Christians.
The Emperor, shocked that Sebastian was still alive,
had him beaten to death.
Catholic athletes the world over now call on St. Sebastian
when they need a bit of that same endurance to get through
a tough race or push themselves just a little farther.
St. Sebastian, pray for our Bengals!!

Prayer for Married Couples
|
|
Almighty and eternal God,
You blessed the union of married couples so that they might
reflect the union of Christ with his Church:
look with kindness on them.
Renew their marriage covenant,
increase your love in them,
and strengthen their bond of peace so that,
with their children, they may always rejoice
in the gift of your blessing.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
