In a historic moment for Florida PTA, Maxine Ann-Marie Lewers, a dedicated and passionate child advocate from Coconut Creek, Florida, has been installed as the 60th president of the Florida PTA, the state’s leading volunteer child advocacy association. This significant event was officiated by Otha Thornton, the first Black male president of the National PTA, marking a new era of leadership and inclusivity.
Maxine, the first Jamaican-American to hold this esteemed position, brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to ensuring every child’s potential is realized. As a mother of four and a proud grandmother of four, she understands firsthand the challenges and opportunities within our public school system. Her mantra, "Back to Basics in which parents and educators are viewed as partners", underscores her unwavering dedication to the PTA's mission.
With over 23 years of leadership experience at all levels of PTA, Maxine has demonstrated exceptional commitment and vision. For the past two years, she has served as president-elect of Florida PTA. Her prior roles include Vice President for Leadership Development and Vice President for Membership Development, showcasing her extensive involvement and leadership within the organization.
Under Maxine’s leadership, Florida PTA aims to strengthen the partnership between parents and educators, engage legislators, drive growth in both the mission and membership of the PTA, and enhance organizational effectiveness to better serve the community. “The pandemic highlighted longstanding inequities in our schools and communities, issues that have only been further exacerbated by cultural conflicts, and over politicization of our schools,” said Maxine. “The PTA is committed to addressing these tough—but necessary—conversations to create a brighter future for our children. We will continue to use our collective voices to advocate for our kids and ensure they reach their full potential. I am honored to lead Florida PTA and work with our members nationwide as we strive to be the one voice for every child.”
Maxine will serve as president of Florida PTA until July 2026, alongside a newly elected Executive Committee. Her leadership promises a future where all are welcome in PTA in addressing the unique challenges our schools face in meeting the needs of children.
