August 27th, 1878: Begins electric lighting experiments.

August 09th, 1884: Mary Stilwell Edison (Edison’s first wife) dies at Menlo Park, age 29.

August 3rd, 1890: Edison's third son, Charles, is born.

August 1890: Purchases property in Silver Lake, New Jersey (now the Bloomfield-Belleville area); locates the plant of the Edison Manufacturing Company on the site.

August 24th, 1891: Executes patent applications (U. S. Pats. 493,426 and 589,168) for the kinetoscope and kinetograph.
