Join us for your choice of 51 exciting classes in May and June. We’ll continue to offer both in person and Zoom options, as well as shorter lectures and a few longer, full six-week sessions. Summer School might be a kid’s worst nightmare but at Osher it’s fun! Osher Online will continue with six additional classes with new instructors in July and August. Five new special events will keep you happy and engaged until classes begin again. With all of these choices, how will you decide what NOT to take?

Over two years, archaeologists and the Chinese descendant community have worked to learn more about the life of Chinese railroad workers in Utah. Come and see real artifacts from excavations at Terrace, Utah. During the excavation, archaeologists encountered hundreds of artifacts from traditional Chinese medicine jars to ancient coins. Many of these have never been seen before, and this may be your last chance before they find a home in the soon-to-be-built Museum of Utah. We will share our findings and shed light on the lives of people who played a crucial role in shaping Utah's history. Learn about the challenges they faced, their contributions, and the significance of their cultural heritage.

Storm Bowling, located in Brigham City, is the world's largest producer of bowling balls, forging up to 2,500 balls a day. Everything is done in-house including marketing and logo design by their 125 employees. First, all the raw materials are brought into a containment area away from fumes. The materials are then mixed to form a liquid resin, poured into shapes, cooled, molded, and dried to make the round balls that all bowlers use. The patterns on each Storm bowling ball are unique and random because of how the mix fills the molds, using their patented process.

2024 is a year of anniversaries. Join us as we celebrate Osher's 20th Anniversary at the U and the 30th Anniversary of the Salt Lake Bees. We will enjoy a baseball game and dinner together at the Smith's Ballpark. We had such a great time at the Jazz game event this past March, that we have arranged for members to watch a Salt Lake Bees game (vs the Albuquerque Isotopes) from the Diamond Patio of the ballpark. The Diamond Patio is a private space, with seats that overlook the home plate. The non-refundable $59 special fee covers game tickets, dinner, and non-alcoholic drinks -- tickets were significantly discounted for our group! AND one lucky Osher member will have the honor of throwing the first pitch! Reserve your space right away and join the fun!

Join us on a "sweet" tour and visit one of Utah's most well-known chocolate candy manufactories. Learn about the history of chocolate and of this family-owned and operated company. Mrs. Cavanaugh's Chocolates have been made and distributed since 1964 and have won numerous awards, including Best in State. Upon arrival, each person will pay $5 which covers the cost of the tour as well as some chocolates to take home.

Happy 20th Anniversary to Osher: Yesterday, Today, and Into Our Future

Thanks to the inspired ideas of Bernard and Barbro Osher, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Utah is celebrating 20 years since its founding. We received our first starter grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation in March 2004. Fred Esplin was Vice President of Institutional Advancement at the U and his friendship with Osher Foundation President Mary Bitterman helped launch our Institute. In fall 2004, our very first catalog was only 13 pages. We had 49 members, 14 instructors, and 12 classes. By contrast, in fall 2023, we had over 1,500 members, 70 instructors, and 80 classes. Join us for a trip down memory lane as we discuss how this wonderful program began and help brainstorm what our future may hold in another 20 years!

Our four speakers this week will be meeting to broadcast the presentation together for the final session of spring term. Join us in person in the audience with other Osher members in Room 248 at 540 Arapeen Drive from 12 to 1 PM. Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Feel free to bring your brown bag lunch and invite a friend who might want to “test drive” Osher. Or grab something to enjoy from U Hungry Café on our lower level. We will then sign off with a fond farewell to L&L until fall term!

Announcing Osher Stories Our New Podcast!

In celebration of our 20th Anniversary, we are collecting recorded interviews with Osher members, instructors, and volunteers as they share their experiences and describe what this wonderful program has meant to them in their lives. Our goal is to share 20 stories with our membership and with people "age 50 or better" in the community who may be looking for something new at this stage of life. These recordings will be featured in our weekly email newsletters and social media accounts and archived on our website for the foreseeable future. Listen in as members tell us about how they first found out about Osher, friendships they have formed here, what favorite classes and instructors have been, and unique perspectives about how learning and curiosity never retire!

Fearless Abstraction - A 55+ Workshop at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts

You are invited to participate in Fearless Abstraction, a FREE eight-week painting and skill-building workshop taught by artist/educator Samantha da Silva. The workshop includes a drum circle experience with Steve Waters and a talk with UMFA Curator Emily Lawhead. A celebratory exhibition in partnership with Jewish Family Services at the Sorenson Multi-Cultural Center will be held on June 6. Funded by a generous grant from the Wieler Family.
Samantha da Silva is a Brazilian-born artist living in Salt Lake City, Utah. She is a third-generation artist shaped by migration, assimilation, and her desire to create. Her artwork has become a navigational tool that helps to connect her to new surroundings and provides a form of consistency in a life full of movement. Da Silva is best known for her large-scale relief sculptures that resemble topographic maps and cracked earth, made from found materials such as dirt and sawdust. The themes of this body of work revolve around belonging, spirituality, mapmaking, and resourcefulness. Samantha has taught at various public and private institutions in Canada, the United States, Hawaii, and France. Her work has been featured in Architectural Digest, Bravo TV, HGTV, and others.

The Language and Memory Aging (LaMA) lab led by Dr. Brennan Payne in the Department of Psychology is recruiting participants for their current study. This study will measure electrical brain activity (using electrodes placed on the scalp) and track eye movements while participants listen to speech presented in background noise. Participants also complete a short hearing acuity test. All data will be de-identified and kept confidential. This study takes place on the main U of U Salt Lake City campus. There would be one test session that lasts 3.5-4 hours, on average. If you choose to participate, you will be compensated $20/hour. Parking will be provided at no charge.
